Understanding The Term ‘Noncomedogenic’

Trusted Health Products

Ever browse the skin care and makeup aisles and pick up items at random? You might have noticed some of them are labeled with the word “noncomedogenic” but not realized what it meant.

While it looks big, its meaning is quite simple. Noncomedogenic is a term applied to cosmetic items when they prevent blocking pores. Ideally, this is best for those with acne-prone skin to help keep pores from trapping in more fodder for breakouts.

Unfortunately, there are no regulations preventing manufacturers from claiming that their products are noncomedogenic. Additionally, anything labeled as noncomedogenic should merely be taken as guidance.

There is no guarantee that it won’t cause breakouts, but it is formulated with ingredients that won’t clog pores which lowers the chances of having pimples pop up out of nowhere.

Noncomedogenic Products

In general, products that are comedogenic are thicker and creamier than their noncomedogenic counterparts. Noncomedogenic products are ideal for oily or blemish-prone skin.

Aside from reading the labels for noncomedogenic to steer you in the right direction for your skin type, you should know which ingredients will be best for you.

Best Noncomedogenic Skincare Ingredients

When acne is mild, you should consider the skincare line you use. Switching to formulas that contain beneficial ingredients can help you reveal calmer, clearer skin.

Salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and resorcinol are just a few examples. Even noncomedogenic oils are a great option on their own as carriers or with essential oils. Hempseed oil, sunflower oil, sweet almond oil, and neem oil can really nourish skin without clogging pores.

Don’t Be Fearful Of Comedogenic Labels Either

Just because something is labeled with “comedogenic” or simply neglects to brand it with “noncomedogenic,” that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s more important which ingredients are found in it.

The ingredients that have the largest composition in the formula will always be listed first. If you spot harsh chemicals, that’s definitely a hard pass. Instead, get to know what ingredients are good for your skin and seek them out.

Many ingredients that are comedogenic are good for skin like olive oil, argan oil, coconut oil, and coconut butter. These things aren’t the best for acne-prone skin but if your skin is on the dry or sensitive side of things, comedogenics can help strengthen that protective skin barrier and help keep skin healthy deep down.

Tips For Choosing Noncomedogenic Products

There are all different kinds of noncomedogenic products from your makeup to your skincare ritual items. Always look for oil-free and lightweight formulas as these will be less likely to clog your pores.

It’s an extra bonus if you choose products that have things like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and vitamin E for natural hydration and nourishment.

Cleansers that have salicylic acid or glycolic acid will help skin get the cleanse it needs without depleting your skin’s natural moisture. Part of why you have breakouts is due to your skin overcompensating for the dryness from products that don’t help your skin.

Once you take care of that, you’ll find your best complexion within reach.
