Brush Smarter: How To Protect Your Enamel In Your Oral Care Routine

If your teeth are very sensitive, yellow or cracked and pitted at the surface, you may have enamel erosion. Enamel is the hard, thin coating that covers the crown of your tooth. This protective coating can wear down over time for many reasons, such as acidic foods and drinks, tooth grinding, acid reflux and certain medications. Read on to learn how you can protect and restore your enamel while caring for your teeth.

Brush And Floss Gently

You already know that brushing and flossing are essential for dental health, but did you know that improper technique can contribute to enamel erosion? Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristle brush. Hard bristles can wear enamel away quickly. Use light pressure and short strokes to minimize abrasion. Remember to floss at least once a day to prevent buildup of plaque between your teeth.

Remineralize Your Teeth

Minerals are the most important component of tooth enamel, and remineralizing products are a great way to protect and restore enamel. You can use a toothpaste designed to restore enamel or a remineralizing powder that can be brushed onto your teeth alone or with your regular toothpaste. Remember not to rinse these products off your teeth immediately because the minerals need time to soak into the tooth's surface.

Avoid Whitening Products

Everyone wants whiter teeth, but that Hollywood smile may come at the expense of your dental health. At-home whitening strips, trays and even whitening toothpastes contain harsh bleaching chemicals that wear away your teeth's enamel and exacerbate sensitivity. Because loss of enamel can make teeth appear more yellow, your whitening products may also do more harm than good. If you must whiten your teeth, get a professional treatment from a dentist in your area.

If your case of enamel erosion is severe, it may be too late to save it. However, there are other options to save your teeth. Veneers and crowns can cover damaged teeth, and bridges, implants or dentures can replace lost teeth. With today's dental technology, there is no smile so bad that it can't be restored.
