Do you want to keep your smile as healthy as possible? Then you should follow the same strategy as you would for an overall healthy lifestyle. What you eat definitely affects your dental health.

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), the more sugary foods and drinks you consume, the more prone you are to tooth decay. If you want to have something to smile about, take special consideration for what you eat and drink. In addition to having plenty of water and focusing on fresh whole foods, you should try to eat more of the following foods for your healthiest teeth.

Cheese

If you love cheese, there’s good news for you! Regular consumption of cheese raises your oral pH and thus, lowers risk for tooth decay. Researchers think it has to do with the increase in saliva from eating cheese. It also doesn’t hurt that cheese is full of calcium and protein which do your teeth loads of good!

Yogurt

While you’re loading up your cart at the dairy case, swing by the yogurt section. Like cheese, it has plenty of calcium and protein, but it also contains probiotics that are good for your gums. Make sure it’s a plain variety though…you don’t want to get suckered into eating added sugar!

Almonds

If you want something sweet yet savory that’s good for you, retrain your taste buds to love almonds. They give you more protein and calcium making them a good snack. Plus, almonds add more crunch to a boring salad or a great garnish to your meal.

Apples

Instead of reaching for a sugary treat, choose an apple. With lots of fiber and a rich water content, it naturally makes the saliva flow in your mouth. Plus, its rough texture massages your gums and does lots of good for the overall health of your mouth.

Leafy Greens

For your best health overall, leafy greens is the way to get there. But for oral health, kale and spinach are wonderful for adding more calcium plus they have folic acid that can help keep gum disease at bay. Make a salad, blend it in a smoothie, or even sneak it in soups and stews for more nutrition.

Celery

When you want a crunchy snack, choose celery and a dip like hummus. It has antioxidants including vitamins A and C but the texture helps scrape food particles away between brushings.

Carrots

Raw carrots can also boost your saliva production and stave off cavities. Add more of it to your salad or choose it for a snack over chips and other savory options.

It’s no miracle cure, but when you start eating better, you improve your health. That includes the health within your mouth. Take time to nourish your body with nutrient-rich foods and you’ll find you have less trouble during those dental checkups.
