Hives! What Causes Those Red Blotches?

We've all been there: experienced those red, patchy, sometimes itchy segments of skin, Sometimes raised, sometimes flat - the result of some type of reaction our body is having. The appearance of hives can actually be caused by a myriad of things. Some have incredibly sensitive skin and are highly allergic to many different elements. For those who are susceptible to food allergies, even the tiniest bit of shellfish, nuts, or eggs can cause an unsightly outbreak of red, bumpy flesh. However, many people aren't aware that hives can be caused by a multitude of unexpected things.

Whether they are caused from nervousness or allergy, hives are red blotches or red raised welts that many people have experienced at one time or another. The medical term for this is urticaria. Depending on the trigger, hives can be very minimal and hard to even notice to very obvious and widespread. Because there are so many different skin conditions, sometimes there is some confusion as to what constitutes a hive as opposed to another skin ailment or issue.
