Age spots themselves are said to be caused by extensive exposure to the sun. They however become more and more common the older an individual gets, with the majority of sufferers being older than 50. Sometimes these spots can be confused as dangerous or harmful to someone who isn't familiar with them. However, they are actually quite benign. The main concern is often how to potentially treat them and help them fade over time, so the landscape of the skin can look more even.
Making sure skin is adequately moisturized is absolutely vital for the prevention and treatment of age spots. Skin that is naturally dry or unprotected from the sun are at greater risk for these spots. The use of sunscreen is also imperative. The more lengths you go to, in order to protect your skin, the more benefits you will likely reap from those efforts. Because age spots are caused by heightened pigmentation, protecting the skin from the way the sun can influence and change it will prove to be helpful.
It's also important to switch up your skin care routine if you are terribly worried about the appearance of a few age spots. There are many cleansers and moisturizers that can be used that have specific elements in them that help to even out skin. Using a spot corrector with vitamin C will also help with hyper-pigmentation. It's especially important to make sure that you are taking care of your skin consistently and finding products that will protect it from further issues.
Anti-age products, especially those that contain retinol, are known to not only fight and combat wrinkles but also help with hyper-pigmentation. The level of effectiveness is going to be determined by the amount of retinol in the product, how susceptible to the product your skin is and the frequency with which you use it. The more consistent you are with trying to combat and reverse age spots, the more successful you will be. Constancy is key. Also realize that age spots are harmless and only need to be tended to if they cause a problem cosmetically with self esteem. They are incredibly common and just a sign of experience and years lived!

]]>One of the most important ways to lower breast cancer risk is to avoid gaining weight. If you're already overweight, trimming down before age 45 will lower the chance of developing breast cancer post menopause. Exercise can help to lower the levels of hormones which are related to breast cancer. Studies involving more than 100,000 women showed that those who exercised regularly were at less risk for breast cancer.
Moderation
Even though the correlation between diet and breast cancer prevention has been inconclusive, there has been a lot of hard evidence relating it to alcohol consumption. There has been much information about the positive benefits of moderate alcohol intake and heart disease- which kills far more women than breast cancer. However, if you are have other risk factors for breast cancer or a family history of it you may want to avoid it altogether.
Forget supplements
Soy foods are very common in eastern countries like China and Japan, and those countries also have some of the lowest breast cancer rates in the entire world. Soy foods like tofu have been shown to slightly lower risk for breast cancer, but soy supplements can have the exact opposite reaction. There are agents present in these supplements that can act like estrogen in the body, and cause cell changes that increase risk for cancer.
Fruits and Veggies
There hasn't been much solid evidence linking diet to cancer risk, but there are facts that support the fact that maintaining a healthy weight (which can be achieved by eating a diet that is lower in calories) can. Studies from UC San Diego reveal that women who eat at least 5 servings of vegetables or fruits daily have cut their risk of breast cancer related death by half.

]]>Loaded with antioxidants just like orange and yellow sweet potatoes, the pigments in the purple variety give it some distinct advantages in promoting brain health. These pigments help preserve the integrity of blood vessels that transport oxygen to the brain that normally diminish as we age. Keeping these blood vessels in good working order will ensure a healthy supply of blood to the brain. The best results will come from eating one sweet potato twice a week with the nutrient rich skins intact.
Coffee
Though not the primary reason for consumption of coffee among most people, it actually has the ability to protect the fat component of cells against oxidative stress. This creates a positive effect of protecting brain cells, as the human brain is made up of 60% fat. Home brewed coffee tends to have less caffeine than varieties bought in a coffee shop, and will be a better choice considering that the best benefits come from drinking 2-4 cups a day. If you're sensitive to caffeine, drink less or drink decaffeinated coffee instead.
Ginger
Ginger is a potent anti-inflammatory, and can preempt the manufacture of inflammatory brain chemicals, and potentially slow down the progression of inflammation related conditions like Alzheimer's disease. A 500 milligram supplement capsule a day is the best dosage, but you can also add one teaspoon of fresh ginger or one half teaspoon of powdered ginger to a meal 2-3 times a week.
Sardines
Most people that think of fish for their brain boosting omega-3 fatty acids usually think of salmon or mackerel. However, sardines are loaded with them and are also far less likely to be contaminated with mercury than larger fish. They're also budget friendly, and conveniently canned and often require no cooking. Include 3-4 servings of omega-3 rich fish in your meals weekly. Be sure to trim the skin when cooking other fish, as that will also reduce mercury content.

If you are already taking a blood thinner, talk to your doctor before starting to take fish oil as it can increase bleeding risk in these situations.
CoQ10
Typically combined with niacin (vitamin B-3), CoQ10 can help to minimize side effects from cholesterol lowering statin drugs like muscle weakness. It can also help to enhance the energy production in cells, and inhibit blood clot formation. Typical dose is 50-100 milligrams daily.
Red yeast rice
Available in tablet, capsule, powder, and liquid forms, this is an extract of red yeast that is fermented onto rice. It has long been used by the Chinese, and it can mimic the same actions as statin drugs for lowering cholesterol. Average dose is 600 milligrams, twice a day, but can be enhanced with combined with naturally occurring plant sterols. These can be found in small amounts in fruits and vegetables, but also in supplement form. Add 400 milligrams of these for best benefits.
Lycopene
Found in tomatoes, watermelon, pink grapefruit, red bell peppers, and papaya, this phytochemical can be helpful in lowering blood pressure. Research has proven it can lower systolic (top) blood pressure by 10 points, and diastolic (bottom) blood pressure by up to 4 points. It is a potent antioxidant, and has even been thought to have cancer preventing properties, but they have not been proven. 10 milligrams daily is the average dose.

]]>Not only your skin, but your entire body can be dried by a sunburn, so be sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. There are some great remedies in your kitchen for dealing with the pain. If your eyelids are burned, soak tea bags in cool water and apply them to decrease pain and swelling. Wrap some dry oatmeal in gauze and run water through it for a few minutes. Remove the oatmeal and soak a cloth in the liquid leftover and apply every few hours.
Heat exhaustion
Unlike the winter months, summer weather predictions are usually pretty accurate. Keep this in mind, and plan ahead for extreme temperatures. Limit consumption of both caffeine and alcohol, as they both speed up the dehydration process. If someone is already suffering from heat exhaustion, either splash them with cool water or apply cool towels rather than submerging them in water. This will allow the water to evaporate and absorb more quickly and have a better cooling effect.
Mosquito bites
Mosquitoes can spread a number of diseases, so the first thing you should do once you've been bitten is to clean and disinfect the area where it appears with soap and hot water. To help prevent or reduce the inflammation caused by a bite, wet the affected area and rub an aspirin over the bite as soon as you can after it appears. Dissolve baking soda or Epsom salts in water, dip a cloth into that water and place it on the skin of the affected area for 15-20 minutes to help alleviate the itching.
Bee stings
The most important thing to do in order to avoid pain and swelling from a bee or wasp sting is to act fast, no matter what treatment you choose. Just like mosquitoes and flies, bees often are carriers for some nasty bacteria. Clean the area first, and then scrape the stinger away so that it doesn't continue to pump venom into your skin. Apply a paste made of powdered activated charcoal to draw the poison out. Mud is an acceptable substitute, as not everyone keeps activated charcoal lying around.

]]>Many ancient cultures believed in the healing and preventative powers of onions. Even ancient Greek athletes used them prior to competing. Over the years, a number of these age old theories have been put to the test, and more often than not they're proven true. The sulfur compounds in onions can reduce the symptoms of diabetes, and they're loaded with quercetin too, which prevents inflammation and helps prevent a number of different cancers.
Cayenne Pepper
Used for anything from pain relief to aphrodisiacs, cayenne peppers have been a staple of the “new world” since Columbus brought them here. These peppers get their heat from capsaicin, and that's also where the pain relief aspect comes in. Studies have shown that it reduces the chemical reaction that sends pain messages to and from the brain.
Plantain
Not to be confused with the banana-esque tropical fruit of the same name, this plantain dates back to the 12th century as a poultice for everything from insect bites to wounds and burns. The plant has numerous antimicrobial properties that can help heal the skin and sooth burns and bites. The seeds are also used as the fiber source in laxatives.
Parsley
Dating back to 1629 when it was recommended and prepared for the Queen of England, parsley root has been used for health of the urinary tract. This benefit can be accredited to its ability to increase urine output. For the best result, drink tea made with parsley three times a day, or eat parsley leaves regularly for long term benefits. The chlorophyll in parsley also makes it a good breath freshener.

Look at how you spend your time daily and find what really matters and what doesn't. Also be sure that you get enough sleep, because that's when your body recharges and recovers from daily stress.
Change the way you think
When you're under stress, its easy to feel bad about yourself. This can cause you to lose sight of whats important on a day to day basis. You may focus on only the negative aspects of a given situation and not even consider what positives may come from it. This can be the beginning of a vicious circle, as negative thinking like this can cause more stress. Think about all aspects of a situation when dealing with a stressful problem. Look at it from multiple angles and identify things that you can change, and find ways to work around or deal with what you cannot.
Relax your mind
Spend some free time with a hobby that you enjoy, or with a pet. Share your thoughts and feelings with others, because if you let it build up it can become toxic. Many people find relief from stress in meditation. Focusing on the here and now of the specific moment can allow things that were previously stressing you to melt away. Some people go a step beyond simple meditation and undergo hypnosis, which you can even do yourself with a little research.
Relax your body
Regular exercise, even in small amounts can relieve muscle tension from stress. It helps oxygenate your muscles and improve circulation. Deep breathing exercises can help set you on the right course as well, and are recommended with such other body relaxation techniques as tai chi and yoga. Try combining some of these techniques in the spare time you create from evaluating your lifestyle.

]]>Nearly 30% of young adults bite their nails, and there are reasons beyond ugly hands for breaking this bad habit. Biting your nails can interfere with normal nail growth and damage your tooth enamel. Not only that, but there are plenty of harmful bacteria that live underneath your fingernails, which you certainly don't want to bite into. Keep your nails trimmed short and there will be less to chew on, and less space for bacteria to live as well. If that doesn't work, the same products used to stop thumb sucking in children will make your finger nails taste just as terrible.
Losing sleep
Your body depends on sleep not only to recharge energy, but to recharge your immune system. Hormone levels, appetite, and mood are also affected by the amount of sleep you get. Needless to say, there are serious consequences to sleep deprivation, not to mention the effects it can have on your appearance (wrinkles, dark circles, etc.). Treat your sleep like a serious diet to make sure you get enough of it. Keep track of things like caffeine intake and time spent in front of a TV or computer monitor to find out what might be causing your lack of sleep.
Fear of Flossing
Most dentists will tell you that a majority of their patients don't floss regularly. They'll also tell you that gum disease is the most preventable disease there is when you practice good oral hygiene, including flossing. Know what else they'll tell you? That more and more research points to the link between gum disease and more serious concerns like heart disease, stroke, and cancer. See where this is going?
Midnight snacking
The idea of late night eating isn't so bad itself, its the fact that you're probably not eating the healthiest snacks by the light of the fridge. Combine this with the fact that stomach acids have much easier access to the esophagus when you lay down while you're still digesting that slice of cold pizza. Try to go to bed earlier and limit the time between dinner and when you might snack, or snack earlier and healthier.

]]>The problem that most people have with mayo is in the proportions. Truthfully, it isn't that bad when you're using a teaspoon or two as directed. However, the majority of mayo-niacs load it on much thicker than that. This can pile up the calories and fat in a hurry. Better options are lower calorie condiments like mustard, BBQ sauce, or even light mayonnaise.
Lunch meat
Processed meats may seem lean, but they often include loads of sodium and preservatives. There is also an increased risk of colon cancer now linked to the chemical preservatives that are frequently used in lunch meats. The sodium content in some lunch meats can be staggering, up close to 500mg in some cases. Try roasting your own meat for sandwiches, or look for deli brands lower in sodium and nitrates that are contributors to high blood pressure and heart disease.
Salad dressing
Two tablespoons of any creamy salad dressing can add 12 grams of fat and 120 calories to your salad. Kind of defeating the purpose isn't it? Whats worse is that most people use twice that amount of dressing. Downsizing to the two tablespoon recommendation is a good idea, but even better is going for a lighter dressing in the first place to get fewer calories.
Frozen French fries
Most people keep some sort of frozen potato side dish handy as they're usually good accompaniment for any of the three meals of the day. One small serving of the traditional potato products like French fries or tater tots can contain 10 grams of fat and over 500mg of sodium in a 3 oz serving. Take the time to bake or roast potatoes to take advantage of the nutrients they contain.

]]>The most common eye diseases share a common link- oxidation, chemical process in which free radicals damage cells in the body, in this case, the eyes. A natural by-product of metabolism, these oxygen-based molecules are also produced in large amounts by smoking, air pollution, and excessive sunlight. A few of the best antioxidants to help protect your sight are vitamin A, zinc, lutein, and fish oil (which are high in omega 3 fatty acids).
Water and exercise
Drinking a lot of fluids improves the transport of antioxidant nutrients to the eyes, so drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to lubricate them. Regular exercise is also good for eye health, especially in helping to prevent glaucoma. It boosts circulation throughout the entire body and can reduce pressure in the eye as well.
Sunglasses
Most people wear sunglasses for comfort, but there's a more important reason: the suns ultraviolet radiation greatly increases oxidation in eye tissues. Excessive sun exposure is a leading cause of cataracts and macular degeneration. Make sure that your sunglasses block 100% of both UVA and UVB radiation, and styles that wrap around the face are best as they block most of the sunlight that would otherwise hit your eyes.
Relax
Our eyes get virtually no rest other than when were sleeping. An easy way to soothe and relax your eyes is to rub your palms together until they're warm, and place them gently over your closed eyes with the fingers of each hand overlapping and resting in the center of the forehead for a few minutes. Do this at least once a day.

]]>Nuts, especially almonds, hazelnuts, and peanuts, are a good source of vitamin E, which helps to minimize inflammation. Eat a single one ounce serving of any of these nuts daily year round to help prevent symptoms. If you do have symptoms, increase the servings or add a few tablespoons of peanut butter as well.
Omega 3s
Cold water fish like salmon, mackerel, trout, herring, and sardines as well as walnuts and flaxseed contain omega 3 fatty acids, which help fight inflammation. Eat at least two servings of cold water fish each week year round, and three servings during the seasons when you experience airborne allergies. Flaxseed can be added easily too, as it can be found in supplement form.
Zinc
Oysters, shrimp, crab, legumes, whole grains, and tofu are all high in zinc, which has antibacterial and antiviral effects that provide relief for immune systems that are overworked by fighting allergies. Have 6 oysters, 6 shrimp, or a few crabs each week, and twice that when allergies flare. Also have one serving of whole grains, beans, or tofu daily.
Tea
Whether green, white, or black, tea is full of flavonoids, plant compounds that reduce inflammation. Tea also increases proteins in the body that fight infection, again relieving an overtaxed immune system. Have at least one cup a day, and double that when allergies are in season. Have it early in the morning to stimulate the tiny hairs in the nose that keep pollen and dust away.

If learning a new word doesn't appeal to you, try something challenging that's more your style like reading history books or learning chess. People who have stayed true to this daily learning have been able to recover as much as 20 years of memory power.
Reconnect
Over the last 10 years countless studies have been published showing that people in happy marriages have healthier and longer lives. Some even showed decline in things like heart disease and cholesterol based upon their relationship status. Emotional connections don't just appear, they require work to maintain. Take the time out to reestablish some of these relationships that you've lost. It can be as simple as writing an email or picking up the phone, and it can add years to your life.
Climb the stairs
In a study of 5,000 people over age 70, all participants had some sort of physical limitation, but the ones who got even minimal exercise were 55% less likely to develop more serious physical issues like severe joint pain or muscle weakness. Minimal exercise in this instance was defined as the equivalent of walking a mile in a week, so even the little movements can add up to a great preventative degree.
Stop and smell the flowers
60% of all doctor visits are for stress related issues. Take some time out to remember that the world doesn't have to be rushed through. For some people its as simple as a few minutes of contact with the natural world, even 5 minutes of watching birds at the feeder can have a restorative effect. Nature has a way of restoring our equilibrium, so take a deep breath and relax.

]]>Deep breaths raise your body's blood oxygen levels, which can help increase your energy and alertness by lowering blood pressure and slowing your heart rate. The idea is to breathe deeply into your belly, not your chest. While sitting upright, inhale slowly through your nose and feel your abdomen push out, then exhale slowly through your mouth. Alternatively, a method used for quick energy in yoga calls for quick inhaling and exhaling through your nose while your mouth is closed. It is recommended to take 3 of these rapid breaths within a second, and repeat up to 15 seconds.
Move Around
If you have an office job like so many Americans, try getting a little exercise either on your lunch hour or if you get a shorter break throughout the day. A study from California State University, Long Beach suggested that the participants had a longer time of increased energy after taking a 10 minute walk than they did if they ate a candy bar or other sugary quick fix. The reason that a little brisk exercise works better than a store bought solution is that walking pumps oxygen through your veins and muscles.
Drink More Water
Your brain is made of 83% water, so it just makes sense that if you're dehydrated its not going to function as well as it could or should. Fatigue isn't the only symptom of dehydration of course, it can also cause depression, confusion, aggravation, constipation, and headaches. Make sure you drink plenty of water, or eat foods that have high water content like fruits and vegetables. Excess caffeine can cause dehydration, so be sure to balance it carefully.

Its no secret that the biggest traps at home are the TV and computer, so a little careful planning can add some activity to those non-active pastimes. Try placing exercise equipment like a treadmill or stationary bike near your TV and use it for at least a half hour a day.
Some people choose to put their computers on an elevated shelf or stand so that they can stand while using it. Video games are just as sedentary activity as watching TV in most cases, but there are options like some of the games on the Nintendo Wii that allow you to mimic motions in sports such as tennis or baseball. While certainly not a replacement for a workout, but still much better than the alternative.
At the office, try standing up when you answer the phone, or scheduling walking meetings when there aren't a lot of notes to be taken. Another good practice is the 10 minute rule, which is to get up and stretch or walk around for 10 minutes out of every hour. Try parking your car farther away from the office, and take the stairs instead of the elevator when/if you can.

]]>Quercetin
Quercetin is a plant pigment that can inhibit cells that produce histamine. Its naturally occurring, and can be found in various foods like citrus fruits and onions. Don't plan on getting enough of it through your diet though, the amounts found in foods can be minimal. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, take up to 600mg of a quercetin supplement either preventatively or once your symptoms start. It has minimal side effects like headache or upset stomach in some cases.
Stinging nettle
Stinging nettle is a flowering plant that reduces histamine production when ingested. The average dose is between 500mg to 1000mg depending on the severity of the symptoms. Consult your doctor or allergist first, as some people can be allergic to stinging nettle. Rare cases can cause upset stomachs.
Fish oil
The same omega 3 fatty acids that can reduce inflammation that leads to heart disease also helps with allergies. When buying fish oil, be sure to read the label carefully. Make sure you're getting mercury free fish oil that is either purified or pharmaceutical grade. This will ensure that what you're buying is potent enough to have positive effects and has had any and all potential toxins removed. Typical dose is 2000mg a day.

]]>Dairy products are not only difficult for the body to digest, but they can cause weakness in the muscles in the wind pipe and cause snoring. Dairy leaves behind a trail of mucus in the body, and that dampness can weaken the soft palate. It also is a leading cause of fatty tissue around the neck, which can also lead to snoring.
Go Bananas
Research from the University of New England in New South Wales, Australia indicates that a compound that is found in bananas can help keep the throat open and reduce airway pressure, thus reducing snoring. There seems to be a higher level of these compounds when the bananas are blended than when eaten whole, so try them in a shake or smoothie.
Sing Your Heart Out
A British study of 20 snorers had the subjects perform vocal exercises for 20 minutes a day for 3 months. More than half of the test subjects reported less snoring. The study conductors seem to believe that these vocal exercises helped the participants control the muscles of the soft palate and upper throat and thus reduced their snoring.
Change Your Pillow
Your snoring problem may simply lie in your beat-up and worn-out pillow. It's best to sleep on a pillow that will elevate your head, since this slightly raised angle will not only align the head and neck but will also open nasal passages -- two factors that can reduce snoring.

]]>Cravings for red meat can signal a lack of iron, or conjugated linoleic acid, which is a fatty acid that helps your body burn stored fat. A healthier option to replace iron is dark, leafy greens like spinach. This is especially beneficial if your diet is high in fat or carbohydrates. Try incorporating smaller amounts of red meat into your diet so that you dont go overboard when you do indulge.
If you're craving baked goods:
This usually indicates that your blood glucose levels are fluctuating. The stress hormone cortisol triggers the release of glucose, and thereby insulin to regulate it. The sugars and carbohydrates in baked goods raise levels of blood sugar and serotonin, which is a brain chemical that invokes feelings of happiness. Instead, try a piece of fruit or a glass of 100% fruit juice. Not only will the natural sugars help level you out, but they also provide nutrients like vitamin C that you cant get from a brownie.
If you're craving chocolate:
Chocolate contains an amino acid called phenylalanine, which is essential in the body's production of brain chemicals dopamine and serotonin. These chemicals enhance mood, and reduce pain. A better choice is dark chocolate as it has less sugar and more cacao. Another option is to mix unsweetened cocoa powder with skim milk and add a natural sugar substitute like Stevia.
If you're craving French fries:
This usually means you're lacking sodium, or experiencing a blood sugar imbalance caused by cortisol. The simple carbs in potatoes break down to glucose, and the salt will satisfy your need for sodium. The healthy alternative is salted nuts like almonds, pecans, or walnuts. These are full of sodium as well as healthy omega 3 fatty acids. The protein found in nuts will help keep your energy up as well.

]]>According to a 2009 poll by the American Pain Foundation, 56% of people who have suffered from back pain or muscle strains over the past year said that it was made worse by stress over the economy. In another poll in the journal of the International Headache Society, those who suffer from migraines say that stress is the number 1 trigger for their head pain. People typically react to stressors by tensing up the muscles in their shoulders, face, and neck, which can cause and worsen pain over time. Also, the same parts of the brain that govern mood process pain as well.
Move More
Many Americans have sedentary desk jobs, and to make that even worse, terrible posture. This leads not only to muscle cramps, but long term damage to the spine. The fluid that lubricates your joints needs to keep moving in order to perform best, so try to stretch or walk around a few minutes each hour to keep limber. Follow these guidelines to better computer posture: feet flat on the floor, elbows at a 90 degree angle, wrists and head straight forward.
Don't Oversleep
A new study shows that chronic sleep loss can create a debt that simply cannot be made up. This, paired with the fact that sleep deprivation can greatly impact chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia should be a serious wake up call. Sleeping in on the weekends is no match for getting the proper amount of sleep on any given night, and staying in bed for longer than the recommended 7-8 hours can lead to all kinds of pains. Movement is the key to keeping muscles and bones in healthy order, so if you are going to sleep in on Saturday make sure its no more than 2-3 hours later than you would normally get up during the week.
Cellular Breakdown
With all of today's technology, its no wonder that this generation is more connected than any before it. So much so that new medical terminology has to be created to keep up with the conditions people suffer from. Doctors have officially labeled a condition in which the thumb tendons become painfully inflamed as Texters Thumb. Not only the thumbs are affected by this, because typically when texting or talking on the phone you're not using the best posture either. Longer conversations will strain your neck and arm from holding the phone to your ear as well, so use a headset when talking.

]]>Genetically modified seeds that are being distributed by the major agricultural companies contain genes that will cause the seeds of the crops to be useless, which will force the growers to continually purchase more seeds rather than using their own. We actually featured an article back in May on this, and you can check it out by clicking here.
The concerns now shift from growing profitability to health and safety issues with the release of some recent study results. The International Journal of Biological Science has published a study in which rats were fed three types of genetically modified maize (corn) products that are found in foods and feed around the world. When compared to rats who were not fed genetically modified foods, the one who were fed GM foods showed negative effects to many internal organs, and particularly the liver and kidneys.
Its safe to say that the potential for human damage is there, especially considering that roughly 7 out of 10 foods we consume have been modified in some way. To help raise awareness, The Non-GMO Project has been fighting to get foods labeled according to whether they have been modified or not. Exercise
Its becoming ever more obvious that most of us aren't getting the proper amount of exercise, especially this time of year. With the busy schedules that most of us carry, it doesn't often allow for that extra hour to hit the gym. Studies have shown that even moderate amounts of aerobic, physical activity can help reduce the risk of heart disease. Try incorporating things into your regular day that can help, like taking the stairs for example.
Quit smoking
Studies show that smokers have more than double the risk of heart disease than non smokers. Its easier said than done, but if you smoke, quit. There are many aids available to help you along the way, and while they still contain nicotine, they are much safer than the alternative. These range from patches and gums, to prescription medications, and even newer ideas like electronic cigarettes.
Oral health
Its estimated that 35% of American adults suffer from some form of gum disease or periodontal disease. You might think it an uncommon link, but recent studies have shown otherwise. One theory is that damaged tissues in the mouth like gum pockets (areas where the gums have pulled away from the teeth) can allow harmful bacteria to enter the blood stream where they can begin to form plaque in the arteries.

Studies have also shown that it can help lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and reduce the risk of blood clots and stroke. Fresh garlic is best, as these beneficial nutrients are lost within one hour of smashing the cloves. Add fresh garlic to your daily diet instead of supplements for this reason.
Mushrooms
Mushrooms are loaded with nutrients and minerals like vitamins B, C, and D, calcium, protein, and fiber. The nutrients found especially in the Reishi, Shiitake and Maitake varieties are well known for their ability to activate and enhance the immune system.
Berries
Raspberries and blueberries in specific are extremely high in antioxidants that help boost your immune function by fighting off free radicals that can contribute to a number of health concerns. Blueberries in particular can also keep bacteria from bonding to cells in the urinary tract, and therefore help prevent infection.
Broccoli
Broccoli is full of immune boosting nutrients including vitamin C, fiber, and even beta carotene which is good for the eyes as well as the immune system. It also contains chemical compounds that have been shown to stop growth of cancer cells.

]]>4 Every-Day Foods That Could Kill You
Milk produced with artificial hormones
Some, but not all dairy farmers treat their cattle with growth hormones to increase milk production, and thereby profits. These hormones can also increase infections and because of that, possibly even pus in the milk. This also increases production of insulin like hormones in the milk which can contribute to colon, breast, and prostate cancers in humans.
White flour
All of the good nutrients in flour are removed during processing, and then it is bleached with a chemical agent that is very similar to the same bleach you use in cleaning and laundry. Some vitamins get added in the final processes, and it's passed off as "enriched". What most people don't know is that this so called "enriched" flour can cause increases in blood sugar that rival refined sugar.
Vegetable oils
For a long time the experts have told us how much healthier and beneficial oils like canola, corn, and soy are. The problem with this lies in their transformation into cooking oils. This process includes heavy refinement that can make them oxidized and therefore toxic. A much healthier option is coconut oil, which does not oxidize. For higher heats try grapeseed oil, or extra virgin olive oil for light cooking.

]]>Stress will be the end of you. If you let it, that is. Daily stress can add up and seriously bring you down, causing anxiety, depression, and even anger issues. What many don't realize is the havoc it can wreak on your immune system and overall body function. If it gets out of control it can increase cholesterol, blood pressure, weight gain, and cause insomnia, headaches, acne, and even hair loss. Take appropriate time to unwind and clear your head daily. Meditation with focused, deep breaths is a great way to reduce the silent killer that is stress.
]]>Go for your regular checkups, at least annually. Men tend to avoid going to the doctor much more than women. Perhaps its the can-do, tough attitude that they can get better on their own. Maybe its for fear of bad news, or not feeling the necessity since you feel fine. Feeling fine often has little to do with actual health though. High blood pressure, cholesterol, or even diabetes will rarely present themselves in ways you're likely to notice right off the bat. Suck it up, be a man, and get checked out.
While were on the subject of things men are uncomfortable with, one of the most important things to monitor as men age is the prostate. Prostate cancer results in 250,000 deaths per year worldwide. Early symptoms are primarily found in the urinary system, where tumors can press against the bladder and cause either more frequent urinating, or trouble urinating. It can eventually spread to the lymph nodes in the pelvis, and eventually into bones. The exam may be a scary thought for a lot of men, but the possible repercussions are much more so.

]]>Though the weather may be cooling off, it may still be a good idea to keep windows closed. Especially between 10 am and 3 pm, this is when pollen counts are usually at their peak. Its also a good practice to have all the vents and air ducts in your home cleaned out prior to firing up the furnace for the first time of the season. Mold and dust mites that can build up in them over the summer will easily get stirred up and spread around the home.
Eating more foods like citrus, apples, onions, tomatoes, lettuce and broccoli can help supply your body with a natural antihistamine, quercetin. It stabilizes cells to prevent histamine release, and is also a natural antioxidant. Most people will not be able to obtain the recommended daily value of it from food sources though, so a supplement may also be necessary. However, people who have liver disease shouldn't take quercetin, so be sure to consult your doctor or allergist first.

Studies have shown that a more active lifestyle can help fend off inflammation that can lead to arthritis. Whether its aerobic exercise like walking or flexibility based exercises, even 15 minutes a day can make a big difference. Yoga and Tai Chi are good examples of flexibility exercises that can keep joints healthy. People who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis often experience more pain or stiffness in the hands and fingers, so small hand exercises like making a fist and opening your hands wide, or touching your finger tips can be quite beneficial.
Athletes use heat and cold therapies to ease pain and shorten recovery time, so why cant you use it for those aching joints? You can, and in most cases, to a great degree. Try using a heat therapy for 15 minutes prior to any exercises like we mentioned above. This can be from heat patches, warm water bottles, or even a hot shower or bath. Heat works by dilating the blood vessels and stimulating circulation. Cold therapy works conversely by constricting blood vessels and reducing swelling. It may be uncomfortable at first, but deep pain can often be numbed by cold treatment.

]]>Diabetes affects more than 16 million Americans. It can damage blood vessels, and lead to other serious conditions such as stroke, kidney failure, and liver disease. Diabetes occurs when the body isn't able to use sugars as it should. Many people treat their diabetes with insulin shots daily, or in instances of type 2 diabetes, with pills. There are many ways of treating diabetes, and here are a few ways of managing your blood glucose naturally.
]]>Avoid processed foods at all costs
Companies that produce foods that come in boxed or microwavable form use over 6,000 chemical ingredients to make it look and taste like the real thing. By doing this, your body is robbed of any real nutrition your body needs. Processed foods increase the level of toxins in your blood stream which your liver will have to deal with, and since diabetics are usually more prone to liver disease, this is of vital importance.
Kick artificial sweeteners to the curb
Artificial sweeteners have so many negative connotations that it would be pointless to try and address even a fraction of them here. Aspartame alone has led to over 10,000 complaints filed with the FDA, yet its still on the market. A healthy alternative is Stevia. Found in the supplement section of your grocery rather than with other sweeteners, the white extract form is much sweeter than sugar and still doesn't raise blood glucose levels.
Don't worry, eat fatty
Organic or unrefined fats are actually very important to overall health for diabetics. Without them you'd be missing out on essential fatty acids like omega 3, which your body cannot get elsewhere. Consuming healthy fats and oils will help you feel satisfied when you eat, thus preventing over eating and weight gain.
Walk it out
Insulin resistance can be reduced for up to 48 hours after even a half hour of walking. Lightening the work load of the pancreas will let it handle the processing of glucose like it should. Losing even a few pounds can reduce the strain your body is under, and lower both blood sugar and blood pressure.

]]>
Untamed lightning is pretty fast, but did you know that it takes 20 minutes or more for the electrical signals that signify fullness to travel from your stomach to your brain? When you eat faster, you eat more. You're likely to overshoot your calorie goals by leaps and bounds if you don't take your time. There are plenty of other negative effects from eating too quickly ranging from simple indigestion to far more serious long term issues in your digestive system. If you eat slower, you chew slower and you're likely to eat less.
Crash Diets
Crash and fasting diets can provide quick results, but the effects don't often last. When you lower your calorie intake to the degree that most of these call for, you significantly lower your rate of metabolism. It works for a while, and makes perfect sense: if you have fewer calories to burn, you'll burn them more slowly. However, once you're satisfied with your rapid weight loss and end the diet your body retains that rate of metabolism. Therein lies the problem. You return to eating as you did before, but your body's metabolism stays at the same slow rate and the pounds will likely pile back on.
Skipping Meals
It may make sense at first thought that skipping a meal here and there will provide the same result as eating less. This is another case of great in theory, poor in execution. Skipping meals (especially breakfast) can lead to results similar to the crash diet. If you skip a meal early in the day you'll be likely to snack more frequently and lose track of those calories you've been keeping watch over. Frequent, smaller meals or snacks are a great way to maintain your metabolism and curb hunger.
Frequent Weigh-Ins
Patience is a virtue has never been truer than when it comes to trying to lose weight. Weighing yourself every day while dieting is something akin to watching paint dry, or watching interest being gained on an investment minute by minute. No matter how successful you may end up being, constantly checking in will never show you the results you're looking for. Space out your weigh-ins according to what your goal is and you're sure to be happier with the numbers you'll see.
Set Realistic Goals
When starting a diet its of vital importance to have a realistic goal in mind. Whether its a long term or weekly goal, put it within reach. Give yourself a challenge, but one you can defeat. With this mindset you'll be more likely to celebrate your success and continue doing what works best. If you set out telling yourself that you're going to lose 25 lbs in your first week, it will have more chance of also being your last.
