Having a sweet tooth can have a rotten effect on your health. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, American kids under the age of 12 consume almost 50 pounds of sugar every year! Image consuming your own weight in something as toxic as white sugar! Scary thought! The good news is that while there is instant gratification that kids derive from eating sugar, there's also an immediate payoff when the amount of sugar they consume is reduced. Researchers at the University of California-San Francisco and Touro University conducted a study the results of which are very encouraging.
They modified the sugar intake of 43 Latino and African American kids ages 9 to 18 and in as few as 10 days there was an immediate improvement in their metabolic health. There were significant reductions in bad cholesterol levels. Their blood sugar and blood pressure levels also improved. And a number of them lost weight - all by replacing sugar with a healthy starch. While this research was based on a small study, the results are huge.
White sugar is poison for the liver, kidneys, and pancreas. A diet of white sugar, high fructose, junk foods, white flour, and other empty calories can lead to obesity, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, diabetes, and cancer.
Reducing sugar by cutting sodas and sugary drinks is one of the first steps the American Heart Association recommends when parents are ready to pull the plug on their kids sugar intake. And during this holiday season replete with eggnog, cakes, pies, and candies a lot of our kids will gorge on sweet treats while they're out of school.
Get Proactive
Being proactive and reducing sugar now will pay off later. Fill your kids Christmas stockings and their bellies with natural sugars from fresh or dried fruits and fruit juices that don't have any sugar added.
Serve desserts - homemade cakes, cookies, and pies - made of organic whole ingredients, organic raw sugar and other non-genetically modified food goodies. No one wants to feel deprived of a happy tummy during festive family occasions - especially children. A well-planned feast can be filling, fun, and healthy.
