Candida is a type of fungus that, when in correct levels, helps you with nutrient absorption and digestion. When it goes into overproduction though, it can cause major problems, especially if left untreated.
A disruption in your body’s natural pH balance can cause candida to get out of control. This then leads to a chronic condition in your body, one you’ll want to handle quickly to keep it from escalating and to get back to feeling like yourself. When candida goes into overload in your mouth, it’s often called oral thrush.
Not sure if you have candida? Check these symptoms:
- Whitish or yellow bumpy patches on inner cheeks, tongue, tonsils, gums, or lips
- Slight bleeding from those bumps when they’re scraped
- Sore or burning sensation
- Dry, cracked skin in the corners of the mouth
- Trouble swallowing
- Unpleasant taste in mouth
- Loss of taste
While candida is supposed to live in your mouth, when it takes over, that’s how trouble begins. This can happen due to a compromise in immunity or even from taking antibiotics for a recent ailment. If you have diabetes, cancer, HIV, or AIDS, you’re at greater risk. Additionally, if you smoke or wear dentures, your chances of candida overgrowth are also increased.
Generally, you can prevent it with good oral health and by rinsing or brushing right away if you take inhaled corticosteroids. If you find you have oral thrush, you should have your doctor check you out. You’ll likely be given a prescription anti-fungal to clear it up and get things back to normal.
While you most certainly should visit your doctor if you think you have candida to get a prescription anti-fungal treatment, there are a few things you can do at home to help improve your situation.
- Brush with a soft toothbrush
- Don’t scrape the bumps, no matter how tempting
- Replace your toothbrush after the candida is gone
- Take care of your dentures if you have them and make sure to clean thoroughly
- Don’t use mouthwash or sprays unless specifically prescribed to you
You can also try some homemade remedies for relief like rinsing with warm saltwater or even water and baking soda. Another good way to get things in control with candida, not just for your mouth but your whole body, is to start every morning with yogurt that has beneficial probiotics. By keeping things in balance from here on out, you’ll be less likely to endure another experience with candida again!
