Your temporomandibular joint connects your skull and jaw. If this joint is injured, then it can result in a condition called TMJ disorder. This is often caused by excessive jaw clenching and tension that puts too much pressure on that joint. TMJ disorder causes severe pain, both in the nerves in your teeth near the site and by shooting through your head in the form of migraines. Fortunately, there are several ways that it can be treated.

Home Remedies

In many cases, home treatments can be used in order to manage TMJ pain. Over-the-counter medications can be used to reduce the pain and inflammation. You can also do gentle jaw stretches. Additionally, it is important to reduce your stress. When you are stressed, you have a tendency to clench your jaw. This can worsen the pain of TMJ disorder.

See A TMJ Dentist

If you are unable to treat the pain at home, then it is time for you to see a TMJ dentist. Your dentist can provide you with an oral appliance. This is a device that is placed over your teeth. The device can be soft or firm. An oral appliance can help relax the muscles. It can also stop you from grinding your teeth. TMJ disorder can be triggered or worsened by teeth grinding. A misaligned jaw or teeth can also cause TMJ disorder. That is why you may need to get orthodontic treatment.

Muscle Relaxants

Your doctor can prescribe muscle relaxants to treat your TMJ disorder. These medications are designed to be used for a few weeks. They can help ease the muscle spasms in your jaw and help relax your jaw when you aren’t physically able to keep it relaxed on your own. This is important in more extreme cases, as long periods of relaxation are essential for your jaw to heal properly.

Physical Therapy

A physical therapist can help you ease the pain of your TMJ disorder. They can teach you to do exercises that strengthen your jaw. They can also use other treatments, such as heat, ice and ultrasound. The idea is to reduce inflammation and make your jaw stronger so that it isn’t put under so much strain anymore. They will also often teach you methods to reduce the tension in your jaw that can be aggravating to the existing disorder.

Surgery And Other Treatments

Botox injections are sometimes recommended for TMJ disorder. The Botox injections can help your muscles relax. They can also reduce pain. Surgery is rarely needed for TMJ disorder. Doctors and dentists recommend the most conservative treatments first. However, if all of the other treatments fail, then surgery may be recommended. Doctors can repair or replace the damaged joints. Surgery has more risks than other procedures, but it can provide relief.

TMJ disorder can cause you to experience excruciating pain. The good news is that it can usually be managed with home remedies. You can also get your condition treated by a dentist. Physical therapy is another treatment that can be used. Additionally, surgery and Botox can ease the symptoms of TMJ disorder.
