Treatment Options For Those That Have Missing Teeth

Missing teeth isn’t as uncommon as you might think. Dental patients have a variety of options for solutions to missing teeth. Depending on your personal preferences, individual circumstances  - like the number of teeth you’re missing and budget - you might prefer one approach over another.

Here, we'll explore the different ways to replace missing teeth to create a healthier, happier, attractive smile.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is one of the most common dental procedures performed in clinics on an everyday basis. The dentist drills a titanium implant socket into the jawline. After the bone heals and fuses to the new socket, which takes about three to six months, your dentist can put a crown into the socket.

This crown will look and function just like a real tooth. You shouldn’t have to do anything special to clean or treat it any differently from your other teeth.

Dental implants are ideal for patients who have a single missing tooth, but they may not be appropriate if you require treatment for multiple missing teeth. You might want to consider the other options below in such cases.

Fixed Bridge

While dental implants are usually used to replace single missing teeth, a fixed bridge is often preferable for filling larger gaps from multiple missing teeth. In this case, instead of being anchored to your jaw, your replacement teeth are anchored to a tooth next to them.

The dentist makes molds of your existing teeth and the space that needs to be filled so that the bridge can be made correctly. Because of this, the process may take several appointments.

Fixed bridges are often more affordable than dental implants. Additionally, they stay in place permanently, even during regular cleanings and other work.

Removable Partial Denture

When you receive a partial denture, a temporary replacement is fitted into the position where missing teeth would have been. They look and function just like normal teeth, but they are removable.

Many patients might prefer dentures because, when they are properly maintained, they appear attractive and vibrant. On the other hand, they are more susceptible to damage and can only be worn for a limited amount of time before the patient must remove and clean them.

Full Dentures

A full set of dentures temporarily replaces the entire set of teeth. This option might be best suited for patients who have extensive or near-complete tooth loss.

The downside of dentures, either complete or partial, is that they require a little bit more upkeep than implants or bridges that stay in position permanently. Patients must remove full dentures frequently, as they cannot be worn comfortably or safely for the entire day.

Talk to your dentist about which treatment plan is ideal for you based on your individual circumstances that we have described above. With the right intervention, you'll be smiling brightly in no time, impressing friends and family with your new tooth or set of teeth.
