Tooth Loss In Seniors – Why Does It Happen And What Can You Do?

As you age, your teeth tend to face a variety of issues such as tooth loss or decay. This can be a major inconvenience, but it happens to most people unfortunately. It is another effect of age that cannot always be avoided. Data shows that nearly 75 percent of all people over the age of 65 begin to lose their teeth or have gum disease or decay in some manner. While this is not entirely avoidable, you can take measures to counteract the aging of your mouth.

Why Teeth Fall Out

The most common question that people have is why do teeth fall out with age? The answer to this is simple: they are not indestructible. While human teeth are incredibly strong, they still break down and fall apart through years of use.

Through years of chewing, gnawing, and grinding, the enamel on the outside of your teeth eventually begins to decay so your teeth are more susceptible to acidic and sugary foods. This can be the start of a variety of tooth and gum issues in the future. This breaking down of enamel is natural and cannot be avoided entirely, but you can make sure that you take care of your mouth and teeth to slow down the aging of your teeth, just as you do with your skin.

What Can You Do To Take Care Of Your Mouth?

While your teeth will age naturally, taking care of your mouth and teeth is crucial to have the most healthy teeth possible. Taking care of your teeth can benefit you in reducing your chances of your teeth falling out, getting gum disease, or having oral infections.

Below are some of the biggest ways that you can prevent your teeth from aging at a rapid rate:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day: Brushing your teeth twice a day will help to reduce the buildup of plaque and bacteria by cleaning away all of the food you eat throughout the day. This will help to maintain the enamel and strength of your teeth by not allowing them to be affected by foods that sit on them all day.
  • Floss between your teeth twice a day: Flossing ensures that you get all of the gunk and bacteria from between your teeth and up into your gums. This will also help to prevent the onset of gum or tooth disease by getting the spots that are often harder to reach.
  • Get dental checkups and cleanings: Getting dental checkups and cleanings at least every six months will help to reduce your risk of diseases and tooth decay because the dentist knows what to look for, especially with aging clients.
