Everybody wants a beautiful, radiant smile. But many people don’t realize that behind every blinding smile is a consistent dental care and oral health routine that keeps the mouth fresh and healthy.
You’re probably not aware of this, but the condition of your mouth is a possible reflection of your body’s health situation. If you’re vigilant, your mouth may reveal telltale signs of any potential illnesses and diseases taking place within your system. Keeping tabs on any changes in the condition of your teeth, gums, and tongue may help detect health issues in their early stages.

So, how do you determine if your mouth is in good shape? These are the top five indicators of good oral health.

You Have Pink, Firm Gums

Red, puffy gums that sometimes bleed when you brush or floss could mean there’s something wrong. Healthy gums are pale pink, with teeth sitting firmly on them - not feeling wiggly or loose. Also, they are not swollen or tender to the touch, and are without any flaps or pockets, which are caused by receding gums.

Gums may recede due to a number of reasons, but they are all results of unhealthy oral conditions. It is essential to watch out for these pockets because they provide a place for bacteria to accumulate, leading to tooth decay and bad breath.

You Have Strong Teeth

White teeth don’t only make a great smile, they are also a sign of good oral health. You’ll know your teeth are in good shape because they are free from cavities and discoloration. Poor dental care and unhealthy habits, like smoking tobacco, may contribute to yellowish teeth and their eventual decay.  Needless to say, people who engage in vices should take care of their teeth better.

Another thing: if you had any dental restoration procedures done in the past, check-ups with your dentist or hygienist should help ensure that your dental work is holding up well under the wear and tear.

Your Breath Is Fresh Or Neutral

Most of the time, it’s easy to detect bad breath as you can smell or taste it yourself. A healthy mouth is void of persistent bad breath, also known as halitosis. But while bad breath is commonly brought about by bacteria buildup due to food particles, it can also be because of smoking, dehydration, unclean dentures, or nutritional deficiencies.

You have to be aware of how your breath smells because it does not only signify good personal hygiene, it is also an indicator of gingivitis and other health issues such as sinus problems and diabetes.

Your Tongue Is Clean And Pink

The tongue is another gauge of your oral and overall health. In fact, medical professionals often use it to check for signs of possible health problems in the body. Ideally, your tongue should be pink with a smooth surface covered by tiny nodules called the papillae, which is responsible for perceiving taste.

As the tongue’s surface easily collects bacteria, you have to clean it properly using a tongue scraper every time you brush your teeth. Any changes in its color could mean a variety of health issues: diabetes, cancer, and immune system diseases among them. Also, sores and lumps may signify more severe health conditions. Irregular growth or pains must be brought to the attention of your dentist or doctor immediately.

Your Jaw And Teeth Are Correctly Aligned

Having a perfectly aligned set of teeth does not only do wonders to your smile but also guarantees good oral health. Unaligned and crowded teeth make it difficult for you to clean your teeth thoroughly, making it easier for cavities to develop, and may lead to jaw problems. If you have teeth alignment issues, you should consider talking to your dentist about the best possible way to correct the problem.

Last Words

Flossing and brushing your teeth more than once daily helps in maintaining proper oral hygiene but it does not ensure your oral health. You may be able to detect some of these oral problems on your own, but nobody can do it better than the professionals. Make regular appointments with your dentist. Remember that your dental and oral situation has a direct impact on your self-confidence - invest in it.
