Recent studies have been showing a potential link between bacteria that causes gum disease may have a link to Alzheimer’s. While there are not many studies yet, the current ones are showing similar results in finding signs of this particular bacteria in the brain tissue and spinal tissue of patients with Alzheimer’s either during treatment or in an autopsy.
There has been evidence showing that the bacteria that is responsible for a certain type of gum disease is also gathering within the brain tissue and creating a buildup of plaque within the brain. This buildup is connected to the development and progression of Alzheimer’s symptoms. It is also shown to increase damage to the neurons within the brain.
Some studies have shown that the spread of the bacteria may be treated with an antibiotic. As the antibiotic rids the body of the bacteria the damage can be slowed and even stopped, allowing the disease to progress no further.
Further research may lead to developments relating to the brain and body’s reaction to bacteria in general, and if those reactions are the buildup that is causing the neurological damage rather than the bacteria itself. While research is ongoing there are a lot of unknowns along with what is being learned.
Treating Gum Disease
The beginning of this research may point to ways to help avoid the development of Alzheimer’s by maintaining a general healthy lifestyle and following necessary steps to maintain health and deal with any infections, no matter their cause. While it may not cure all cases it is a place to start in lowering the occurrences of Alzheimer’s in the population.
By lowering the infection rates, and treating gum disease, it may be possible to slow or stop the buildup of the deposits within the brain and the rest of the body that are causing the neurological damage and the symptoms of the disease.
Current developments are working towards a medication that can limit or stop the effects of these bacteria, the gum disease, from affecting the brain in any way. This would help treat those who have gum disease by stopping the bacteria from spreading and stop it from reaching the brain, thereby stopping the neurological damage from occurring. It will not reverse the damage already done, but stop new damage from occurring.
Further research into the connection between gum disease and Alzheimer’s disease has shown a link between the bacteria that causes gum disease and the neurological damage that cause Alzheimer’s symptoms and dementia. While there are not enough studies to show a definite connection or a cure, it is creating possibilities for treatment and prevention.
