A severe toothache can be excruciatingly painful, giving the patient sleepless nights and hamper food consumption. While minor tooth issues can be managed using home remedies and over-the-counter medicines, a dentist best handles severe cases. This piece guides readers on how to figure out if your toothache requires emergency dental care.

Toothaches that last more than two days while causing a lot of pain and discomfort to the patient fall in the category of dental emergencies. Failure to address the issue on time will worsen the situation causing severe gum infections and tooth loss. Below are some of the conditions that qualify as dental emergencies.

Chipped and Fractured Teeth

Broken and fractured teeth can arise due to injury and are often accompanied by excessive bleeding and nerve-wracking pain. Severe injuries can damage the pulp cavity, which is a nightmare for both patients and dentists.

The emergency treatment entails root canal procedures followed by filling up the cavity using a crown. Make sure you contact your dentist as soon as you can after your tooth has been chipped. Getting quick treatment will prevent your tooth from receiving further trauma.

Dental Abscess

Dental abscess refers to the accumulation of pus commonly caused by bacterial infections in the gum. It is often a painful affair that warrants an immediate trip to the dentist. The conditions can arise from injury, botched cavity treatments, and other recurring tooth problems.

Common symptoms of a tooth abscess include swollen gums, fever, and foul breath. Treatment procedures for a dental spot may consist of surgery to drain the pus and bacteria sections and fill up any cavities present.

Make sure you get tooth infections handled quickly so the infection doesn’t spread to other parts of your body. You may need antibiotics to fully get rid of the infection and keep healthy.

Loose Teeth

While loose or wiggly teeth are common in children, the condition is not normal for adults. Adults should have well-formed teeth that sit sturdily in the gum to facilitate food consumption. Wiggly teeth can arise from sports injuries or other unfortunate accidents.

Even in the absence of pain, you should seek immediate dental attention to assess jaw or nerve damage. Treatment involves performing an oral examination using X-ray technologies to diagnose and prevent the spread of potential infections.

Swollen Jaws, Bleeding gums, and Numbness

If your gums bleed and ache after brushing your teeth, it is advisable to visit your dentist promptly. Bleeding gums can indicate gingivitis or gum disease. Early detection of gum illnesses is essential in keeping your dental formula intact and healthy. Some gum diseases won’t go away on their own, which is why you will need to visit a dentist for treatment options.

Whenever you experience any of the above symptoms, make sure to visit a dentist with a credible reputation. Do your research before you even have a dental emergency. Make sure you immediately know who you can call if you notice any of the above symptoms. Don’t hold off on your dental care and prevent further issues by utilizing the services of an emergency dentist.
