Eat More Of These Naturally Teeth-Whitening Foods

Few things are as attractive as a beautiful smile. If you have one, you will surely light up a room whenever you flash those lovely pearly whites. However, even the brightest smiles can lose some of their glow when they're no longer as white as before.

With most of the foods we eat and the beverages we drink, it’s easy for our teeth to lose their luster, even getting stained sometimes. While stained teeth are not exactly a dental emergency, they can be a major concern for most people because they simply don’t look good.

Many turn to teeth whitening procedures right away, and they work well. Still, if you prefer a more natural way of keeping your teeth white, several foods help with this. Let’s take a look at some naturally teeth-whitening foods that you need to eat more of.

Pineapples

If you use stain-removing natural toothpaste, you’d love eating pineapples. Both contain bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme with anti-inflammatory qualities and the ability to remove plaque and surface stains.

Papaya

If pineapples have bromelain, papaya also has a proteolytic enzyme called papain. Papain helps reduce teeth stains and fight plaque formation by breaking down pellicle layer-degrading protein.

Apples

There’s a reason apples are called “nature’s toothbrush.” Whenever you bite and chew on an apple, its fibrous texture helps scrub away debris and bacteria in your mouth. Your gums also get a massage every time you eat an apple.

Apples are also known for their high malic acid content. Many brands of toothpaste count malic acid as an ingredient, as it is believed to have bleaching properties and has proven effective in cleaning teeth and removing stains.

Malic acid also happens to be instrumental in the production of saliva, which helps minimize tooth discoloration as it washes away food particles and bacteria.

Strawberries

Just like apples, strawberries also happen to contain malic acid, so eating them could lead to whiter teeth as well. However, if eating strawberries is not your thing, you can still benefit from their natural teeth-whitening abilities by creating a paste for your teeth made from the fruit and baking soda. Apply the paste to your teeth, rinse with water after five minutes, then proceed with your regular brushing and flossing routine.

Baking Soda

Since we’ve mentioned baking soda in the previous item, we might as well include it on this list. After all, it’s a chemical leavener we use to make the breads we eat rise.

For some time now, many people have been using baking soda as a teeth whitener. Several toothpaste brands contain baking soda, which has natural whitening properties. It’s a mild abrasive capable of removing stains from your teeth.

Cheese

Cheese, particularly the hard kind, is rich in calcium, which helps make your teeth and gums stronger. Cheese also contains casein, a milk protein that does a number of things for your teeth.

For one, casein helps protect your tooth enamel. For another, casein, along with calcium, also plays a role in repairing cavities. Casein can also keep cavity-forming bacteria from sticking to your teeth.

Broccoli

As long as you eat them crisp and raw, broccoli can also serve as a natural toothbrush, just like apples. The fibrous vegetable prevents your teeth from getting stained as it scrubs your teeth as you chew it, effectively removing stains before absorption by your tooth enamel.

Broccoli also boasts of high iron levels, which is good news for your teeth. Broccoli and other foods rich in iron protect your tooth enamel and prevent teeth from getting stained.

Nuts and Seeds

Almonds, walnuts, cashews, and sunflower seeds are pretty good snacks. They can act as a natural exfoliant for your teeth, too. Their light, abrasive texture is good at removing debris, plaque, and surface stains.

While the foods listed above have teeth-whitening capabilities, keep in mind that no one knows how long it would take them to produce results. Research still needs to be done to determine time frames for each teeth-whitening food.

Other foods you eat could also counter the teeth-whitening effects of the foods on this list. If you want the foods mentioned above to have the desired effect, you should also avoid consuming foods that stain the teeth, like tea, coffee, dark-colored fruit juices, red wine, beetroot, and soy sauce.
