5 Ways To Prevent Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a common disease that affects the gums around your teeth and is caused by excessive buildup of plaque. Symptoms of gingivitis include inflammation of the gums, which brings pain and swelling to the area. If not treated properly, gingivitis could lead to more serious periodontal disease

Treatment of gingivitis involves many of the same methods that are used to prevent the disease in the first place, and thankfully, with proper oral hygiene, you can easily protect yourself from getting this illness. Check out these five simple ways of preventing gingivitis.

1. Brush Your Teeth Daily

Protecting yourself from gum disease and other mouth illnesses comes down to practicing proper oral hygiene. The best way to treat your teeth is to brush them at least twice a day. Be sure to brush thoroughly and use the proper technique to cover every tooth, including the ones that are difficult to reach.

Using the best toothpaste for your teeth is important as well, as not all toothpastes are right for everyone. An electric toothbrush can help reach every crevice. Whether you use a standard or electric toothbrush, make sure to replace the brush or the brush head every three months or so.

The brushes should be replaced regularly since bacteria can build up in the bristles, and the bristles can also wear down and become less effective. Brushing your teeth at least twice daily, especially in the morning and before bed, is crucial to maintaining a healthy mouth.

2. Floss Daily

Flossing your teeth is just as important as brushing them. Dental floss can get between your teeth in a way your toothbrush cannot, making it easier to get rid of plaque stuck in those tiny spaces.

When you brush your teeth before bedtime, pair it with thorough flossing to properly clean your mouth of everything that accumulated throughout the day. If you have trouble flossing in the back of your mouth, you can use a floss pick to reach in the back and floss every tooth. Be careful not to floss too hard, as being aggressive with it could hurt your gums.

3. Use Mouthwash

After brushing and flossing, remove leftover bacteria in your mouth by rinsing thoroughly with mouthwash. Many different types of mouthwash are available, including ones with or without alcohol.

While mouthwash with alcohol does a thorough job of eliminating bacteria, it can feel quite harsh on the mouth and may be too painful to use for those with sensitive mouths. If you find mouthwash with alcohol is too harsh for you, ones with less or no alcohol are just as effective at cleaning your mouth and do not cause a burning sensation.

4. Eat Better and Practice a Healthier Lifestyle

Having a healthy diet and lifestyle affects your oral health just as much as it affects your overall health. If you find your teeth are not as healthy as you would like them to be, then cutting back on your eating and lifestyle habits may be the key.

Try to eat fewer sugary and unhealthy foods such as candy and chips, as they can wear down your teeth and generate plaque. The types of drinks you consume, such as coffee, soda and alcoholic beverages, can also damage your teeth if you drink them in large quantities.

Smoking also contributes to bad oral health and disease, so if you smoke, try to quit if possible.

5. See Your Dentist

If you experience symptoms of gingivitis or are concerned about your oral health in general, make an appointment with your dentist. Schedule regular cleanings once or twice a year to ensure plaque buildup does not become a more serious problem in the future. 

Keeping up with your oral health is important. By brushing and flossing regularly as well as making appointments with your dentist when you need a checkup or cleaning, you can maintain a healthy mouth and live without fear of gum disease.
