3 Steps Everyone Should Be Taking To Prevent Cavities

Cavities in teeth are common, but that doesn’t mean you have to be affected by them in your lifetime. By taking the right precautions, you can keep your teeth cavity-free and save yourself from having to endure potentially unpleasant and expensive corrective dental treatments.

In addition to regular brushing and flossing, here are three steps that everyone should be taking to prevent cavities.

Eat the Best Foods to prevent cavities

You already know the importance of avoiding sugary foods if you want to prevent cavities, but eating other types of foods can actually be good for your teeth. Foods that are high in flavonoids, such as cranberries and blueberries, can help combat the formation of cavities.

Believe it or not, even foods and beverages that contain cocoa can be good at preventing cavities because of the polyphenols that are found in cocoa. Other recommended foods to eat for cavity prevention include apples, cheese and peanuts.

Keep Your Mouth Hydrated to prevent cavities

Preventing dry mouth can also be beneficial in keeping cavities from forming. A dry mouth provides a better environment for bacteria and other germs to accumulate on teeth and eat away at the enamel, which may lead to cavities.

Sugar and other cavity-causing residue from the foods and beverages that you consume may also stay caked on the surface of your teeth longer if your mouth is dry. Along with drinking plenty of water, you can increase the hydration inside your mouth by chewing sugarless gum to generate more saliva production.

Don’t Skip Dentist Appointments to prevent cavities

Even though you might be diligent about brushing, flossing and using mouth rinses at home, it’s still important to visit your dentist for regular appointments. Preventative dental care is key to fighting cavities for the long term, and your dentist can provide deep teeth cleanings using special tools along with other treatments that can help keep your teeth strong and healthy.

In general, it’s best to go to the dentist once every six months, but you may need to go more often if you’re more prone to cavities or other dental problems.

Cavities don’t have to ruin the beauty of your teeth and compromise your oral health. By following these steps to keep cavities at bay, you’ll be able to maintain your radiant smile for many years to come.
