Otherwise known as karanja oil, this plant-based oil is used predominantly in India and has been for generations. As many facets of Ayurvedic medicine, this oil has been known to be effective in a whole host of ways. Unlike some of the over-the-counter products, for whichever ailment you may be struggling with, oils have a type of multi-layered effect that allows them to be helpful for different issues. Pongamia oil has different properties that make it as powerful as it is. Here's a bit of its history, its components and what it helps.

This oil is considered the cousin of neem oil and is often used as a replacement element in certain products as it doesn't carry the same smell as neem oil does. With a golden color and a light, nutty aroma, this oil is perfect for skin care issues and concerns. In fact, due to its anti-bacterial, anti-ulcer and anti-malarial properties it can be used to properly pinpoint and treat skin issues like eczema, dandruff, skin ulcers, and psoriasis. The antiseptic aspects of the oil help to clean the compromised and often broken skin while the other elements help to provide skin with nutrients that will help it to heal.

Skin Moisturizer

Pongamia oil is also a great skin moisturizer as it is high in oleic fatty acids. One of the most important and overlooked aspects of your skin-care routine is properly moisturizing your face. So many skin issues are actually the result of your skin not being properly hydrated. When your skin isn't moisturized well, you become more susceptible to things like age markers and oily skin. Most think that oily skin means the skin is too moisturized. No such thing. Oily skin is actually a sign that the skin isn't getting the hydration it actually needs, and it overly produces sebum as a result. So yes, even your oily skin needs moisture.

Insect Repellent

Another use for this oil is as an insecticide as bugs do not like it. You can use a mixture of this oil and water in a spray bottle and treat both the outside and inside of your home. If you have a garden and are worried about pests and bugs doing away with some of your plants, seeds or fruits, try spraying this mixture around its perimeter. You'll be surprised at just how effective it is at keeping the bugs at bay. You can also use it inside as it is gentle and doesn't have an overwhelming smell. Spray the mixture against base boards, window sills and around any type of crevices that may be easy for insects to get in through.

Homemade Products

As a less potent relative to neem oil, this oil is great for homemade beauty products, soaps and natural insecticides. It can double as an effective antiseptic and even help heal skin issues that may be hard fought and very difficult to deal with. Keep some pongamia oil on hand for these common issues.
