What Is Ozone Therapy?

Trusted Health Products

One of the most controversial alternative practices in medicine is ozone therapy. It fights disease with ozone gas.

As a form of oxygen, it is used in gas or liquid forms topically. While it has been used for many years, the FDA issued a warning about it in 2019.

Ozone gas is made up of three oxygen atoms which, in the upper atmosphere, protect the earth from UV rays. But down here on ground level, it is considered a harmful pollutant of air.

It can be dangerous when it is inhaled which can cause lung and throat irritations, coughing, and make asthma symptoms worse. With high exposure through inhalation, the lungs can be damaged, and it can be fatal.

Ozone therapy’s therapeutic effects

But researchers have found that ozone has therapeutic effects when used in topical applications. They found that it could help with treating arthritis, fighting HIV and SARS, activating immunity, treating heart disease and macular degeneration, treating cancer, and even disinfecting wounds.

Because there has been limited research though, the FDA and other official organizations won’t approve of its use just yet.

Will Ozone Therapy Work?

Evidence is certainly limited though to date it has been successful against the virus that causes HIV outside the body. There’s nothing to show that it is either safe or effective for living beings though.

Since ozone is a gas, using it medicinally requires it to be applied to the skin, used as ozonated water, blown into the body, or in the form of a sauna with ozone where the affected part of the body is bagged to expose it to the ozone gas without inhalation.

Some procedures involve mixing a patient’s blood with the ozone and then reinjecting it, known as autohemotherapy, which has not been proven safe just yet.

Are There Side Effects?

Ozone can be very dangerous which is why it is important to be careful. It should never be inhaled. It can make you very sick, causing your mouth, nose, and eyes to burn. You may experience nausea, vomiting, and headaches too. Severe and prolonged exposure can cause respiratory problems.

Temporary side effects of proper use may include flu-like symptoms that will make you feel worse short term. Some patients feel discomfort and cramping, often with a need to pass gas.

While some research touts the benefits of using ozone, you should proceed with caution involving a treatment plan that utilizes it. With more research needed, it is important to understand all aspects of how it can affect the human body more robustly.

Until a greater understanding is reached on treatments involving ozone therapy, you should look at all your options to help you make the best decision for your health.
