Many don't know that the popular, well-known sunflower has more uses than just its pretty, colorful aesthetic. Native to America, the oil that can be extracted from the plant has been used for eons. While some may be unfamiliar with its use in cooking cuisine, it has also been known to be used externally because of its emollient properties.
There are numerous nutritional components to the oil that make it healthy and effective - namely the lecithin and vitamins A, D and E. Here are the ways in which sunflower oil can be used.
Eliminates Free Radicals
Two of the biggest contributing factors to premature signs of aging are free radicals and not protecting the skin properly. When this happens, you will start to see signs of aging like sagging skin, age spots, wrinkles and laugh lines.
A great way to prevent these and to even correct and eliminate these signs is to incorporate sunflower oil into your skin care regimen. It is a natural antioxidant that is high in vitamin E, which helps to neutralize cancer-causing and aging free radicals that target and weaken cells.
Lowers Cholesterol
This is one of the fats and oils that is actually good for your body. Consuming healthy amounts of this oil will help to lower the bad cholesterol levels that can often be difficult to get a handle on. Because this type of oil can be broken down completely in a natural metabolic state, it can prevent bad and good cholesterol levels from being too far out of whack.
When you have high bad cholesterol and low good cholesterol, you may then be susceptible to heart disease, diabetes and other very serious health conditions. Add a bit of sunflower oil to your salad dressings or sauces for some good, healthy fat.
Nervous System
One of the aspects of healthy fats that many people don't understand is that they are necessary for our body's protection and optimum function. Fat feeds both the brain and other organs. Many times a lack of healthy fat can contribute to issues with the nervous system and digestion. If you are having issues with sleep or anxiety, it may be because you aren't including enough healthy fats in your diet.
This also helps with digestion, especially if you are eating a lot of protein. Proper digestion is essential for your overall health and comfort. Sunflower oil can also be a great source of energy. Healthy fats help keep you full and give you natural bouts of energy without the burnout.
Great For Hair
One of the amazing things about sunflower oil is that it's great both externally and internally. For external use, aside from the amazing benefits it gives skin, it's also great for your hair. Because of its light, airy texture it properly softens hair and gives it a natural sheen. If you have the type of hair that is prone to frizz, this oil is perfect for you as it helps to moisturize your hair naturally and tame unruly strands.
