Skin irritation is one of the most common side effects of cancer treatment, particularly those involving radiotherapy. Dry skin and sunburns can be some of the side effects caused due to extremely sensitive skin. Swellings and infections are among other skin symptoms seen in some. So, it is extremely important to take care of your skin during the course of your treatment.

This article will discuss skin care essentials for cancer patients to manage these symptoms.

  1. Stay Hydrated

Hydration is the key to healthy skin. Drink at least eight to 10 glasses of water per day to prevent dryness of skin due to dehydration from chemotherapy.

  1. Hydrate And Moisturize

Invest in a good, quality moisturizer to keep your skin soft, supple and smooth. This will also prevent irritation and itching.

  1. Avoid Scrubbing

While moisturizing and scrubbing go hand in hand, it is advised to avoid scrubbing to prevent skin irritation.

  1. Sun Protection

Always use a sunscreen with SPF 15 to 30 depending upon the level of sun exposure in your area. Sunscreen will form a protective layer, shielding your sensitive skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Wearing full-sleeved clothes and gloves can be another method of protecting your skin if you are allergic to sunscreens.

Even when it is not sunny outdoors, it is relevant to use a sunscreen with a mild SPF. It is also important to wear appropriate clothing at all times in order to protect from the harsh wind and environmental pollutants. Loose-fitting clothes are generally recommended during cancer treatment.

  1. Avoid Cosmetics

The use of cosmetics like base, highlighter, foundation and other products used for makeup can cause excessive skin irritation while you are undergoing cancer treatment. Further, some of the chemical products found in cosmetics have been identified as cancerous and put you at a greater risk.

  1. Use Warm, Lukewarm And Cold Water For Washing And Bathing

Using hot water will cause skin irritation and is also likely to cause skin dryness leading to symptoms like redness, flaking and cracking.

  1. Use Mild Skincare Products

It is important that you be extremely careful with the choice of skin products and opt for the mildest skin products, whether it is a moisturizer, soap or shower gel. It is best to discuss with your cancer group before use.

  1. Stay Away From Alcohol-Based Products

Skin products like aftershaves, after-shower gels and even some common skin care products contain alcohol and can cause your skin to become dry and irritated, which is why they must be avoided.

  1. Ask Your Cancer Support Team Before Using New Products

Any new products such as soaps, shampoos, lotions, ointments and even perfumes must be confirmed for use by your cancer team as these have the potential to cause skin irritation.

  1. Avoid Indulgence In Any Home Remedies

During cancer treatment, your skin is highly sensitive, which is why it is more likely to react to any of kind of products you use. While natural products such as aloe vera, honey, etc. may otherwise be good for your skin, it is best to stay away from any such products during your treatment course. The same goes for any natural and herbal remedies which have not been approved by your cancer group.

If you want, you can use baby oil by mixing it in bath water so that it is sufficiently diluted. The use of baby oil will help in providing some relief from your symptoms.

  1. Consume A Balanced Diet

A balanced diet goes a long way in maintaining your skin health and helps to keep it smooth and nourished. Include the right amount of proteins, vitamins and fats in your diet for particular improvement in skin health. You must discuss a balanced diet with your cancer-support team as it is also important for your overall heath and in the avoidance of skin infections.

In case you suffer from skin infections, you must immediately visit your dermatologist who will prescribe a suitable antibiotic cream to take care of your concern.

  1. Reduce Salt Intake

If you are having skin swellings, it is advisable to reduce salt intake as it causes the skin to store excess water. It is also important to talk to your doctor if you notice swelling or any other unusual signs like discoloration of the skin.
