How To Make Organic Homemade Skin Masks

When you’re having an at-home spa day, putting on a face mask is the cherry on top. However, these can often be pricey. Luckily, there are tons of  DIY face masks you can make yourself at home for the fraction of the price, and they work amazing!

While there has always been some doubt and controversy surrounding homemade face masks, as long as you know what your skin needs and how to target it, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t try some vitamin-rich DIY facemask recipes and give your skin a pick-me-up. Here are a few tips if you are planning to go for it!

Steer clear of harsh exfoliators

While it might be tempting to try those easy recipes that call for a spoonful of sugar for extra exfoliation, you should think twice before rubbing it onto your skin. While physical exfoliators are great to use on your body, they are way too harsh for your face. That said, heavy exfoliation will do your skin more harm than good. If you do decide to gently exfoliate your face with DIY face masks, make sure you don’t do it too often.

Tackle acne

If you want to tackle your acne problem naturally, you'll be happy to hear that you can do that with just one ingredient, which is egg white. The protein found in it is beneficial for killing bacteria, so it can prove to be useful for your acne-prone skin. It is also great at preventing clogged pores.

Another ingredient you should look for is turmeric: its anti-inflammatory effect will help with the redness. However, make sure you don’t apply turmeric directly onto your skin, as it can stain it – mix it with yogurt, for instance, to be safe.

Soothe your skin

If it seems like your skin has had enough, maybe it’s time for a soothing DIY mask. You can use an extremely simple recipe that combines oatmeal and honey for a calming treatment. Oatmeal is rich in antioxidants. Also, it has an anti-inflammatory property, which makes it great for sensitive skin, too. Other ingredients you can use to soothe irritated skin are cocoa powder and green tea.

Refreshing and revitalizing

Continuing on a similar note as the previous paragraph, an ingredient that has a refreshing effect on your skin and you probably already have in your fridge is yogurt. You can add yogurt to your honey-oatmeal facemask recipe to make it cool at the same time. The probiotics in yogurt will also leave your skin soft. All in all, yogurt can be your go-to DIY face mask base.

Delicious hydration

You might usually put that avocado in your shopping cart to make a delicious avocado sandwich, but this ingredient is good for fighting dry skin. Mash it and add a spoonful of honey – which is also great at helping your skin feel moisturized, and you’re done.

Besides avocado, you can also use cucumber for the same purpose. Instead of cutting it into slices, put it in a blender to get a paste you can spread on your face evenly. For an extra dose of hydration, mix it with some aloe vera gel.

Use organic ingredients

With the rising concern for organic skincare, it should go without saying that all the ingredients you use in your homemade mask recipes should come from reliable sources. Go to your local farmer’s market to shop for fresh fruit and vegetables. Those in the Land Down Under can get Australian organic food with a click of a button, too. Make sure you’re not doing your skin more harm than good and choose the best produce.

Leverage the power of essential oils

Just because you're making a DIY facemask, it does not mean you can only use ingredients from your kitchen. Essential oils are so powerful, so you should know the dos and don’ts of using them. However, just a drop or two of lavender oil added to your soothing face mask can work miracles, and a drop of tea tree oil will be helpful in your fight against acne. Making homemade face masks is an amazing natural way of complementing your skincare routine. As you can see, most ingredients that are commonly used can already be found in your pantry. However, as fun as it is, steer clear of overdoing it: once or twice a week should be more than enough.
