Horsetail Skin Benefits

Horsetail – also referred to as shave grass – is named for its appearance. The high levels of antioxidants, the anti-inflammatory properties, and its abilities as an antiseptic and antimicrobial make it beneficial for skin care.

It is set apart from others by its ability to help strengthen skin with silicic acid - a compound of silicon, oxygen, and hydrogen - and its ability to fight free radicals that damage collagen stores.

Protect collagen and fight free radicals with horsetail

For smoother skin that is free of wrinkles and has the strength needed to maintain a healthy appearance, horsetail can be included in skincare products such as cleansers and moisturizers. It protects collagen and fights the free radicals that can cause collagen breakdown, while the collagen and elastin stores maintain the shape and elasticity of the skin, reducing wrinkles.

The antiseptic and antimicrobial properties are beneficial for keeping skin healthy by clearing it of any bacteria that can cause infections as well as damage the skin in any other way. By protecting the skin there is less time and money spent correcting damage.

When a small cut or burn occurs, horsetail also helps speed the healing and deters any infection, making it very useful in a medicine cabinet especially when sunburn occurs.

Close pores and reduce acne with horsetail

Horsetail is also able to close pores, especially when used as a toner or in a moisturizer, which assists in the reduction of acne by keeping dirt and build-up away from the pores. When the skin is cleaned of all build-up and the pores are closed they are protected from the elements and will not develop into acne or other skin concerns, such as dry or flakey patches.

As an anti-inflammatory, dry patches of skin can be healed and any flakiness avoided through the addition of horsetail. Closing pores not only keeps dirt and debris out but can also help moisture from draining out. The decreased inflammation also lessens the appearance of red or flaky skin while also decreasing the itch and irritation.

Smooth skin with horsetail

As with all products that come in contact with the skin there is a risk of irritation and allergic reaction. It is important to test new products or ingredients on a small patch of skin and use only if no signs of allergy occur. When used in moderation this ingredient will help skin to appear smooth, even, and clear, but overuse can lead to irritation or other concerns.

By boosting the strength of the skin and defending the connective tissues from damage caused by free radicals found in the environment, horsetail helps skin stay younger and healthier. It also helps to avoid acne and reduce the appearance of acne or scars already present, and can assist in healing small burns and wounds.

When looking for one ingredient to treat many concerns, horsetail is definitely worth a consideration for all its strengths and benefits.
