Many people looking to improve their overall health and wellbeing focus on what they put in their bodies and overlook the importance of what goes on their bodies. Keeping a healthy diet and an active lifestyle are invaluable; however, the skin is the body's largest organ and absorbs almost everything it comes in contact with.

Often we become comfortable in our routines and the average person uses at least 10 different beauty and healthcare products on their hair and skin. Once you realize the many benefits using natural and organic products will have on your body and the environment, you may find yourself eager to switch out some of your favorite brands.

Watch Out For Greenwashing For Natural Beauty Products

Over the last several years there has been a push in the beauty industry to keep up with the eco-conscious movement. This means many beauty brands will tout generic labels, broad “green” language, and buzzwords on packaging, without necessarily improving much of their manufacturing methods.

Good examples are the terms of “chemical-free” and “organic.” According to the FDA for something to be labeled “made with organic” it only needs to contain 70 percent actual organic ingredients.

Because of the low regulations companies frequently exploit loopholes and overuse empty terminology. This draws in well-meaning consumers searching for labels denoting well-being and environmental consciousness.

Natural Beauty Products More Effective

Up to 95 percent of a certified organic skincare product contents are active ingredients, whereas most synthetic beauty products are only made up of five to 10 percent active ingredients. Many chemical smells can cause headaches and irritation, but organic products only contain natural fragrances so there is no need to cover up chemical scents with added fragrances.

Consumers are often misled to believe natural ingredients are somehow less effective. Most natural products from semi-permanent hair dyes to make-up and lotions accomplish everything synthetic based products do, if not more.

Natural Beauty Products Better For You

Although everyone’s skin is different and your individual response to different ingredients will vary, if you really want your products to moisturize and last then natural and organic brands are the best option. Many skincare companies are realizing that customers can feel the difference in both their skin and hair and are taking initiative in creating sulfate-free and low sulfate product lines.

There are also many other additives and chemicals that can penetrate the skin cells and cause long-term side effects in attrition to immediate irritation or dryness.

Additionally, beauty products that are scented with natural essential oils like jasmine, citrus, eucalyptus, or lavender can even offer an aromatherapeutic experience.

Natural Beauty Products Easier On The Environment

Consumer culture has had a negative effect on the planet in many ways and the beauty and skincare industry is just one of the many contributors. Organic products made from natural ingredients such as coconut oil, aloe vera, shea butter, and oatmeal are known to work well for many skin types and require zero animal testing.

Certified organic products source ingredients from farms that don’t use pesticides or fertilizers, and on average produce less carbon dioxide and toxic waste. Using products that don't include parabens or phenols avoids damaging wildlife and marine life if these harmful chemicals are released into the environment via airborne particles or on their way down the drain.

So by choosing natural, organic, healthcare products you can reduce your footprint on the planet and help preserve the environment.

If you are actively pursuing a healthier lifestyle, choosing organic and ethical health and skincare products should be a top priority. Our skin acts as a protective barrier but its pores also absorb and it’s been difficult for scientists and dermatologists to prove how much of what has an impact on our overall health.

Keeping your body healthy and radiant on the outside goes hand in hand with internal health. It’s important to do your own research about what ingredients work for your skin and which of your favorite brands are able to back up their “eco-friendly” or “all-natural” claims in the fine print.
