Twenty nineteen - dubbed the year of the vegan by The Economist - might have already ended, but consumers remain conscious of the food they eat and the products they put on their bodies. Many beauty brands are capitalizing on this movement by labeling their products as organic or vegan. However, buyers who want to live a more eco-conscious lifestyle should not be easily swayed by these labels and should do a bit of research before buying into a company’s claim. To get you started, we’ve compiled a list of organic makeup brands that have made a commitment to transparency and providing their customers with quality vegan products.

100% PURE

100% PURE is an organic skincare brand that offers cruelty-free and naturally pigmented products that don’t have harsh or toxic ingredients. From idea conception to product formulation, they take serious steps in maintaining their reputation as an organic brand. They have store locations in the U.S. and Canada as well as an online shop. Among their most popular products are lipsticks, face creams, and essential oils. Plus, they make a donation to either shelter dogs or tree planting projects with every purchase - the customer can choose where the donation will go upon checking out.

Acure

At the bottom of Acure’s website are the words “100% Vegan. 0% Pretentious” - and the brand sticks by this mantra. The products made by the company are cruelty-, sulfate-, mineral oil-, petrolatum-, and formaldehyde-free, and the facilities where these vegan skincare products are made are all audited by the SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit) for social responsibility. Acure makes products for the skin, hair, and body, and they’re rather well-known for their facial scrubs and serums.

Au Naturale

Au Naturale brings to the table pigmented cosmetics that are made with safe, naturally derived, and ethically sourced ingredients. Founded in 2011, the brand now operates from a proprietary lab in Wisconsin and serves a global customer base. They have also partnered with fair-trade farmers around the world to ensure that their ingredients are of the highest quality. The company’s founder, Ashley Prange, also lobbies for stricter regulations of cosmetic brands in the U.S. Customers can expect all products from Au Naturale to be ethical, vegan, organic, and paraben-free.

Hurraw!

Established in 2010, Hurraw! specializes in crafting all-natural lip balms with mouthwatering flavors. The brand is fully committed to transparency. Customers can see the full list of ingredients used on each product on Hurraw!’s website, so they can see for themselves that their lip balms are made only from natural, organic, and raw materials. The lip balms are made in an EcoCert-certified facility, too!

Juice Beauty

Founded in 2000, Juice Beauty specializes in clinically validated skincare and cosmetic products made from earth-friendly ingredients. The brand also utilizes plant-based pigments. What’s more, their production facilities all rely on sustainable energy sources for power. Juice Beauty’s bestsellers include day and night creams, blemish-clearing solutions, various serums, and BB and CC creams.

Nourish Organic

Nourish Organic boasts artisanal, eco-friendly products that really work. The skincare products under this label are free of parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, artificial fragrances, silicones, mineral oils, and triclosan, among other ingredients that raise concerns for the discerning buyer. They are also cruelty-free and USDA certified organic and NSF certified organic. What’s more, Nourish Organic’s facilities are powered by renewable sources of energy.

Plant Apothecary

Plant Apothecary is popular for products that suit sensitive skin. They focus on using plant-based ingredients to create soothing and healing skincare lines. In fact, it's popular for its body wash formulations and treatment masks. In addition, the brand is a member of the cruelty-free campaign and actively supports vegan causes.

It’s prudent to look beyond the label when searching for organic and vegan skincare and cosmetic brands. Before committing to supporting a brand, do a bit of research first. This way, you know for sure that your money will be used on products that work for you and companies that further the same causes you believe in.
