Gum infections are no fun, which is why you should listen to your dentist when you’re told to take proper care of your oral health. By letting things go, you leave your mouth open for infections. Known as periodontitis, it targets just below your gum line in sulcus, the crevices between your teeth and gums.

Ignore it all you like, but left untreated, it can be very painful, not to mention expensive to remedy. If you’ve avoided the dentist for a while, it’s time to swallow your pride and make an appointment. Your dentist wants to help you get rid of periodontitis before it turns into something more serious which leads to gum disease and the potential for tooth loss, not to mention it puts you in major danger for cardiovascular diseases too.

Watch For Symptoms Of Gum Infection

If you don’t take good care of your teeth and gums, you will likely wind up with a gum infection. If your gums swell, feel tender, or bleed with simple brushing, that’s one of the earliest signs to watch out for. Your teeth may feel loose or you may notice your gum line is receding. Chronic bad breath is another way to know that you have a gum infection. For a proper diagnosis, you’ll need to go to the dentist.

Treatments For Gum Infection

Thankfully, there are ways to restore your gums to good health. You’ll just need to have your dentist help you. Your dentist can use antibiotic injections right into your gums which can clear things up. Root planing and scaling treatments also may be carried out to give a deep clean all the way down to the roots of your teeth. In very severe cases, removing gum tissues or having bone or tissue grafts might be required. The latter two options are no fun at all, so it’s best to treat your gum infection quickly and get on with a healthier smile.

Prevent Gum Infection From The Start

As mentioned, the longer you wait to treat your gum infection, the worse it can get. Avoiding it altogether would be the best idea! Here are some tips to keep your teeth and gums healthy and have a clean bill of dental health on your next visit.

- Brush your teeth twice daily

And by all means, brush a third time if you so desire. The minimum is brushing once in the morning and once at night before bedtime.

- Don’t skip the floss

It’s important to build up the good habit of flossing your teeth because it helps get food particles that are trapped between your teeth. Brushing alone can’t get those particles, and they can turn to plaque which leads to tartar buildup and continues on to infect your gums.

- Use a mouth rinse

Avoid any mouthwashes that have alcohol. Instead, go for natural formulations like OraMD or ones labeled recommended by the ADA.

- Keep your dental appointments

Make sure you go to the dentist for those twice-yearly cleanings. This helps get any buildup of tartar you may have and keeps your gums pink and healthy.

It’s easy to prevent gum infections when you know what to do. Go forth with your oral hygiene and keep those infections at bay!
