If you have an overbite, it can be embarrassing. More importantly, you may find that it causes issues with eating and you may feel that it is hiding your smile. You probably want to try to do something about it, but might not know what options are available for you. Fortunately, orthodontic treatment can help you. There are a variety of ways to correct it and get the smile that you want. Here are three common treatments that can fix your overbite for good.

Retainers

If your overbite is very minor, then you may be able to correct it with retainers. You will most likely need to wear your retainers throughout the day, and only remove them when you eat or brush your teeth. While you can remove your retainers whenever you’d like to, you will need to wear them as much as possible in order for them to effectively correct your overbite. One of the advantages of wearing retainers instead of braces is that they are a lot easier to clean.

Braces

You can effectively correct your overbite by wearing braces. Your orthodontist will attach brackets and a wire to your teeth in order to pull them back. Over time, the braces will move your teeth into the correct position. The amount of time that it takes to correct your overbite will depend on what other treatment you are in need of. Individuals that have other issues with their teeth besides their overbite will likely have to wear the braces longer. Treatment times will vary, but many people do wear braces for about two years. If your teeth are aligned and you only need to have your overbite corrected, then you may notice results in as little as a couple of months.

Clear Aligners

If you are looking for a less noticeable option to correct your overbite, you may want to consider clear aligners. They can effectively move your teeth, but most people won’t even realize that you are wearing them. These are becoming more popular, and many orthodontists, like Jacqueline G. Rosen DDS, recommend clear aligners to their patients. As your teeth move, you will need to get new aligners every couple of months in order to get the best results. Just like with retainers, you will have to remove them to eat and brush your teeth.

In conclusion, if you have an overbite, you don’t have to just live with it. There are plenty of orthodontic treatments available to fix it. While it may take some time in order to see the results that you want, it will be well worth it in order to get the smile that you desire.
