Taking care of your body requires making your nutrition a top priority. It is even more important as you get older to ensure that your body gets the nutrition it needs to support your best self. Here are some ways that you can move towards enhancing the quality of your nutritional intake.
Identify Your Caloric Requirements
Not everyone has the same caloric needs. Your height, weight, and activity level bears heavily on how many calories you need for adequate sustenance. Your health goals may also be relevant.
If you’re trying to maintain muscle to support your body, you may need to add more calories to your daily intake. If you need to lose weight for health reasons, you may have to reduce the number of calories that you’re consuming.
When you’ve identified the right number of calories to support your needs and goals, it’s important that you don’t stray too far off course. Eating too few calories can put your body into starvation mode and make your metabolism operate much more slowly.
Of course, eating too many calories is likely to cause an increase in your body mass, and it could potentially take a toll on your digestive health.
Educate Yourself About What You Need and What You Don’t Need
Fueling your body the right way is largely about making well-informed choices. Don’t let the instant gratification of having something tasty or the convenience of not having to prepare something wholly drive your decision-making process about nutrition.
Try to pinpoint what eating habits may be having a negative impact on your health. International Life Sciences Institute is a good resource for people who want to learn more about nutrition and their health. Consulting credible informational sources can help steer you in the right direction towards better health.
Use Supplements to Fill Gaps
Steadfast diligence about healthful eating may not necessarily give you all the essential nutrients that you need to feel your best. There are a lot of extremely beneficial amino acids and other proteins which do not occur in many foods but offer numerous health benefits.
For example, Omega-3, a fatty acid which may benefit multiple systems and functions in the body, is not a part of most people’s everyday diet. It is found primarily in seafood and flaxseed.
Likewise, antioxidants such as resveratrol and beta-carotene are not mainstays in the average person’s typical meals or snacks. Supplements can equip you to round out some potential deficiencies and fully harness the utility of vital nutrients.
Limit Processed Foods
If a large portion of what you eat is highly processed, you may be overburdening your digestive system. Even if you feel like you’re indulging yourself with an ultra-processed food item, you’re actually depriving yourself.
Too many foods that are hard for your body to digest can hinder its ability to process the beneficial content of your food. It’s preferable to eat mostly minimally processed foods to get the most out of what you eat.
Put Down Sugary Sodas
If you like to drink soda several times a day, you may be surprised when you calculate just how much of your daily caloric intake is from what you’re drinking. Moreover, the total grams of sugar from just a few glasses of soda can be staggering.
When you’re drinking something sweet, it’s easy to down gram after gram of sugar without really being aware of it or feeling the same type of satiety that you do from eating a lot of sugary food.
Soda can’t be your go-to drink because it has no nutritional value but tons of calories and sugars. All that excessive sugar intake is not good for your digestive system or your blood glucose levels.
The best thing that you can drink is water. In fact, you should be drinking more water than any other liquid. If you’d like to enjoy something fizzy and flavorful, try a naturally flavored seltzer to mix up what you’re drinking and have something extra refreshing.
Sustaining healthy habits and being attentive to your nutrition is a fundamental part of good self-care. When you put your dietary goals into practice, you’re likely going to feel a rapid improvement in how you feel, no matter your age!
