Staying Healthy During Flu Season

Germs, germs, everywhere germs. They are on the surfaces that we touch and in the air that we breathe. We unwittingly bring them into our homes and pass them along to our loved ones with the dinnertime salt shaker. The next thing we know, we are surrounded by sneezing, coughing, nauseous misery. Here are a few suggestions for keeping those nasties at bay.

Don’t Touch This

There is a very good reason that grocery and department stores place cleaning wipes near the shopping carts. Dozens - if not hundreds - of hands have been on those handles, and we have no way of knowing who those hands belong to and whether or not they have good hygiene habits. Make it a point to use those useful sheets of paper with every shopping trip. If there are no wipes available, wash your hands as soon as possible. Even better, make a note to buy your own sanitizing wipes and carry them with you.

It is also best to break any face touching tendencies that you may have. Absentmindedly rubbing the sleep from your eye or tending to an itch on your nose may seem harmless, but it is a sure way to rub germs into your system. The flu virus spreads quickly when it is introduced to a mucous membrane such as the eyes, nose and mouth. Do your best to keep your hands away from your face as much as possible.

Scrubbing Troubles

Cleanliness is important for many reasons. Clean enthusiasts may seem somewhat militant about their purification processes, but they do seem to know how to avoid getting the flu. Take a page from their book and come up with a plan of attack for keeping things disinfected. This may involve moving stationary items like appliances and furniture. Any surface that has a place in our everyday living space can become contaminated. It is crucial to be as thorough as you can when cleaning if you want to dodge the proverbial germ bullet. Remember to wipe down each doorknob, eating surface, faucet handle and remote control.

Do You

A healthy, nurtured body is more resistant to infection than one that is stressed and neglected. You must provide your immune system with vitamins and fuel that it requires to stay well and operating at its best. Drink plenty of pure fluids such as water and unsweetened fruit and vegetable juices so that any impurities can be regularly flushed from your system. Similarly, you can prevent overtaxing yourself by getting an adequate amount of sleep each night. Take the time to decompress, have a laugh and do things that you enjoy. This can work wonders for your ability to stay healthy at all times.

Stay Away

If you do start to feel something unwelcome coming on, do your best to stay at home and take care of yourself. Don’t expose yourself to extreme temperatures or potentially stressful situations. You will also be doing others a favor by lessening the chance that you are spreading an illness to them. Additionally, if it is the thick of flu season and you are invited to - or are thinking about attending - an event that involves being around a lot of people, you may want to seriously consider declining.

Breathe Easy

There are many pollutants in the air that can make their way into our lungs. Dust particles and dander can carry germs with them, so it is wise to keep the air around you free of hazards. Keep a schedule for changing the air filter on your heating and cooling system so that they do not become clogged and reintroduce those particles into your home. An air purifier will also do a good job of clearing your space of the things that can contribute to illnesses.

It isn’t realistic to avoid each and every germ or virus in existence, but it is smart to take a proactive approach to your health. Protect yourself and the people around you.
