With all that said, there have also been some unexpected silver linings, primarily regarding the new habits that have been formed around this societal shakeup. Below are a few habits worth carrying into a post-COVID world.
Home Cooking
As restaurants and bars have closed, households have had to rely more on home cooking to keep themselves fed. This increase in freshly cooked meals has been beneficial in more than one way - fresh food is often both healthier and more cost effective. With certain staples, such as flour and eggs, in high demand, people have had to get creative to keep their menu varied. While a return to normalcy, and fully stocked grocery shelves, will be a pleasant change, the creativity and experimentation brought on by scarcity are hopefully here to stay.
Working From Home
While it may have been a trial by fire, ultimately many employers have learned that working from home is feasible for far more people than previously thought. From television editors to teachers, jobs that traditionally have required a physical presence in an office have been successfully performed at home with nary a hiccup or loss of productivity. In fact, with commuting time no longer a factor, some employees have actually been able to devote more time to their jobs.
Local Travel
Though seeing the Egyptian pyramids or the Great Wall of China are worthy bucket list items, this year has proven that traveling close to home can be rewarding as well. From magnificent state parks to picturesque small towns, COVID is encouraging people to rediscover what makes their own region special.
Masks
Though there will come a time, hopefully soon, where it is safe to once again freely interact with friends, families, and strangers, the habit of wearing 3 ply disposable masks or fabric masks is worth keeping. Even after COVID is less of a concern, anyone with a cold, flu, or even a pollen allergy should use a trusty mask to protect themselves and their neighbors from the more minor ailments that are common in daily life.
Eventually, the threat of COVID-19 will pass and life will return in large part to what it was before this crisis happened. As exciting as that will be, it's also important not to throw out the good with the bad. The healthy habits built during months of quarantine and social distancing will be just as beneficial in a post-COVID world.
