There's a common misconception that good workouts can only happen when you're at the gym. However, with the proper research and preparation, you can get just as good of a workout from your house that you do at the gym with no membership fee or fancy equipment needed.

If you know how to do a home workout efficiently and safely, you can get all the benefits of a gym from the convenience of your home. Use these simple tips to maximize the benefits of an at-home workout.

Use Supplements for at-home workouts

Pre and post-workout supplements can help you maximize your results and make sure you're fueling your body to repair and improve muscle. Protein powders like Power Life by Tony Horton can help you ensure you're getting the best workout possible.

There are many different types of supplements you can use, such as pre-workout, intra-workout, and post-workout. Pre-workout is designed to boost energy and improve your endurance during your workout. It may contain caffeine and vitamins to increase energy levels.

Intra-workout is taken to give you a boost during your training or workout as well as provide extra hydration. Many intra-workout supplements contain amino acids or BCAAs and electrolytes. Protein shakes are the most popular form of post-workout supplement because increased protein after exercise is an important part of muscle gain and recovery.

Find Free Weight Alternatives for at-home workouts

Just because you don't have a fancy and extensive set of weights doesn't mean you can't do strength training and grow muscle. There are many household objects that you can use in place of free weights.

To do bicep curls, you can use food cans or milk jugs. If you want to add weight to your squat or lunge, try using a bag of laundry or a water jug filled up according to your strength. Filled water bottles or cans of food can be used for tricep kickbacks.

Other household objects that can be used as free weights are laundry detergent containers, gallons or cartons of liquid or textbooks. If you're looking for exercise equipment that won't break the budget, try exercise or resistance bands, ankle weights or disc sliders.

Switch Up Your Routine for at-home workouts

Your body will thank you if you don't do the same exercise routine every day. In fact, changing up your routine can help you get over a workout plateau and prevent overuse. There are many different forms of exercise you can use to switch up your routine. You can try a group fitness class or explore a new option on your own.

If you're looking for an intense sweat, try HIIT. HIIT is high-intensity interval training. HIIT is short bursts of high-intensity exercises followed by periods of rest and focuses on giving your maximum amount of effort for each exercise. Running is also another great high-intensity option that can help improve endurance and cardiovascular health.

Yoga can be a good option if you're looking to build core strength and improve flexibility. Yoga also often focuses on muscles that may not be worked on as much in other exercise regiments.

Even simple, low-intensity movement such as a walk around the neighborhood or on the treadmill can do the trick. Always check with a doctor or physician before starting a new fitness regime to make sure it's right for you.

Follow Along Online for at-home workouts

If you need a little extra instruction or are used to trainer-led classes, online workouts can be a great at-home option. There are plenty of options for online workouts. You can sign up for a live synchronous class where you follow along in real time with a trainer. If you have a busier schedule, YouTube has plenty of great at-home workout videos, or you can download an app that will walk you through your workout.

If you're looking to upgrade your at-home workouts, there are plenty of ways to do so without breaking the bank. Whether you're looking to switch up your routine or try a new supplement, there are options for you to be a better athlete without a full gym.
