Your health is important because it can determine not only how long you’ll live, but also how happy you’ll be. There are many ways that you could improve your health in a modern world that often fail to prioritize healthy lifestyles, but the first aspect of health to be neglected is often sleep.

The importance of sleep is often underrated, but the effect it has on the health of your body and your mind is not insignificant. Here’s what you need to know about improving your health by getting a good night’s sleep.

Give Your Body the Bedding It Needs for a good night’s rest

It’s no secret that some bedding is more comfortable than others, and that is complicated by the fact that subjective preferences may run counter to what promotes deep, restorative sleep. Finding the right bed, pillow, and even blanket can make a tremendous impact on the quality of the rest you receive during the night.

The first step to finding the right combination for your needs is to compare mattress brands in order to find a mattress that rides the fine line between firm and soft. Too firm, and you’ll have a hard time getting comfortable; too soft, and your body won’t be adequately supported.

The same principles apply to pillows. Blankets often come down to personal preference, but there are a few notable exceptions. A weighted blanket can be used to help those dealing with anxiety to fall asleep and stay asleep more easily. Otherwise, maintaining an appropriate body temperature is the most important thing that your blanket needs to accomplish.

Allowing Your Body To Get Tired for a good night’s rest

One of the most common and most pressing sleep-related issues facing people today is restless sleep at night and fatigue during the day. A major reason for this is that people simply aren’t getting tired in the traditional sense before they go to sleep each night.

While you may feel sleepy after a sufficient amount of time has passed, you may not be getting enough exercise to warrant going to sleep, and this conflict creates a problem. Because you’re sleepy, but not tired, you’ll have more restless sleep characterized by more memorable dreams and drowsiness during the day.

Getting regular exercise can help to alleviate this problem by simply using more energy during the day and giving your body an energy demand to meet during the night.

Similarly, you may not have the deep sleep you need when the time you go to bed each night is erratic. Your body’s internal clock dictates when you tend to get sleepy, and the same is true of when your body is compelled to stay awake and alert.

Trying to force yourself to sleep when your body is wired will result in the same kind of turbulent slumber as sleeping without expending enough energy via exercise. In short, a consistent bedtime and plenty of exercise will help to ensure you sleep soundly, and these same principles can help to alleviate insomnia.

Wind Down Before Bed for a good night’s rest

A crucial mistake many people make that worsens their quality of sleep is that they don’t allow their bodies and minds to prepare for sleep. This results in trouble getting to sleep, something that can easily reinforce itself and lead to many sleepless nights.

For example, you should avoid being on your computer or your phone too much within an hour or two of trying to go to sleep, because the blue light of LED screens makes it more difficult to fall asleep. Likewise, you need a certain amount of exercise in order to get tired enough to get a good night’s sleep, but doing so within a few hours of bedtime can have the opposite effect and keep you awake longer.

Give yourself a wind down period before bed each night to ensure that you’re not short changing yourself and disrupting your period of rest.

Sleep is important for your physical and mental health, but it often falls by the wayside for a variety of reasons. Using these tips, you can improve your sleep at night in order to live a healthier life during the day.
