Indoor organic gardens are the future of agriculture. Vertical gardening allows you to grow fruits and vegetables anywhere, regardless of the climate or soil condition in the area where you live. Everyone can now start producing their favorite veggies at home with minimal investment, which is terrific news for urban families.
So, if you’re ready to start the journey of growing food indoors, here are some steps that will help you get started with this project.
Decide on space
Before you start growing vegetables indoors, it's essential to determine where you want to store your indoor plants. Some veggies require more space, so keep that in mind, especially if you're going to grow tomatoes, cucumbers or eggplants.
You can install new shelves for your plants or make more space near the window so that they can bathe in sunlight.
Find adequate lighting
Some vegetables will grow if you place them near the window. However, you will have to provide adequate lighting for your plants during colder months.
You must ensure that your plants get the same lighting they would get if you grew them in your backyard. Luckily, many affordable solutions will give your plants enough energy and regulate the temperature.
Control the temperature
Although some plants can survive in cold temperatures, you will most likely have to provide enough warmth. Your vegetables will need to stay in a controlled environment for at least 14 hours a day, which is why you'll need to invest in a thermostat that will help ensure the temperature is adequately maintained in your small indoor garden.
Find the right soil
A perfect potting mix will make your veggies thrive. You can choose whether you want to buy soil from a local supplier or create your unique combination of soil and grit.
As potting soils should be tailored to each plant you want to grow in your indoor garden, it's advisable to get the right ingredients and make your potting mix.
You will need limestone, fertilizers, compost, sand, perlite, peat moss and many other ingredients, and although custom potting soil mixes can be expensive, this method will pay off in the future. Once you prepare the soil, you can start growing your plants indoors.
However, keep in mind you should also get suitable containers for this project. Avoid plastic flowerpots and opt for durable ceramic or clay planters, as they can provide a better environment for most plants.
Consider hydroponic farming
Hydroponic farming is a method that allows you to grow organic vegetables without soil. Of course, you will need water and mineral solutions that will allow your plants to grow.
What's more, many urban families can benefit from investing in hydroponic farming, especially if they live in apartments, but keep in mind that this is also a good choice for farmers who want to save up space and harvest more produce.
So, get your hands on an innovative hydroponic farming kit, and start growing your organic vegetables with minimal waste and investment.
Get the right tools and supplies
Gardening tools can make your job a lot easier, even if you're trying to take care of an indoor garden. Tools such as sprayers and scissors will help you keep your indoor garden healthy, so be sure to acquire gardening equipment before planting new seeds.
Luckily, gardening tools aren't expensive, and you can find them in almost every local supermarket or flower shop. Moreover, buying gardening equipment will save you a lot of time in the future, which is why it's essential to get what you need to take good care of your organic vegetables.
Vegetables found in supermarkets are usually sprayed with pesticides that are harmful to your health. If you want to make better choices for your daily life and eat healthier vegetables, you should start growing food at home. Not only will you have fresh food on your plate every day, but you'll also be able to provide healthy food for your family throughout the year.
So, if you're considering growing vegetables indoors, be sure to follow these steps, and you'll soon discover how easy it is to harvest fresh produce at home.
