Gotta have some hot stuff

No doubt, the hot stuff Donna Summer sang about back in 1979, was not cayenne, but the truth is that capsaicin, the stuff that makes cayenne so hot is good for the body, night or day.

Also called Guinea spice, cowhorn pepper, aleva, or bird pepper, cayenne is a kissing cousin of bell peppers, jalapenos, and paprika, and its named for the capital city in French Guiana where the weather is as hot as this caliente herb.

Heat Treat

Its high in vitamins A, B-6, E, and C, riboflavin, potassium, and manganese - but that's only if you can eat enough to benefit from its nutrient-rich content. Most of us can only handle cayenne in very small doses. Nevertheless, its a great way to jumpstart your circulatory system, lower bad cholesterol, burn off those unwanted pounds, and detox your whole system.

Capsaicin in the capsicum annum herb, which is in the nightshade family, can help if you have digestive problems, such as an upset stomach, gas, diarrhea, or cramps. It can stimulate the digestive tract by boosting enzymes and gastric juice production, both of which help your metabolism process food.

Sweat Equity

Cayenne registers 30,000-50,000 on the Scoville scale, and its heat is full of healing properties. Capsaicin relieves toothache, seasickness, delirium associated with alcoholism, and malaria. Skin conditions, like shingles, as well as osteo and rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, snake bites, and lumbago also respond to the capsaicin in cayenne. It even relieves muscle spasms, and laryngitis. And although it may sound drastic, it has been used successfully to break habits like thumb sucking and nail biting.

Thermogenic Power

A daily cup of cayenne tea is reported to improve digestion and reduce appetite throughout the day. It revs up your engine and keeps it humming all day long so you eat less food and burn more calories. Its metabolic boosting power also stimulates blood flow in dormant hair follicles to promote hair growth. And cayenne tea can help you sweat through the flu and break up mucus congestion.

Cayenne is hot, healthy, and handy. Put it at the top of your shopping list.
