A first-aid kit is essential to have in case of an emergency. Unfortunately, many individuals don't put some of the most important things inside of it. That leaves them unprepared and potentially in danger when emergencies hit. Here are five things you probably forgot to put in your first-aid kit that you should add as soon as possible.

Flashlight

There may be times when you have an injury but can't see it very well because there isn't enough light or the light you have isn’t bright enough. This is when a flashlight can be very beneficial. If your first-aid kit isn't that big, you can choose a flashlight that is compact in size but still produces a significant amount of light. You should also add an extra pack of batteries as well to ensure that your flashlight always works when you need it to.

Thermometer

A thermometer can be extremely beneficial when you suspect that someone has a fever or you need to monitor someone for signs of infection. Unfortunately, a lot of people forget to add a thermometer to their first-aid kit.

There are a wide variety of different thermometers available including ones that are digital and don't have to come into contact with the skin in order to accurately take a temperature. If the thermometer you choose requires batteries, remember to include some extras in your kit, just in case.

Examination Gloves

When someone is bleeding or has some kind of wound, you really don't want to touch it with your bare hands. This can spread germs to the injury, increasing the likelihood of it becoming infected. It could also spread germs or disease to you. This is why you need to have examination gloves in your first-aid kit. They will allow you to avoid coming into contact with another person’s bodily fluids. You can find bulk packages of gloves from distribution companies like Old South Trading Co.

Medication

When someone is in pain or has a fever, a pain reliever and fever reducer can provide quick relief. It's a good idea to have this type of medication in your first-aid kit. It may be beneficial to have a medication on hand that can safely be administered to both adults and children.

If someone in your family takes prescription medication, you should also make sure that your first-aid kit has a supply of it as well. This is important for emergency situations such as an evacuation where your usual medication supply gets left behind. Make sure to rotate the medicine in your kit with new medicine before it expires.

Magnifying glass

There may be times when you need to look closely at an injury. A magnifying glass will allow you to easily magnify this area so that you can determine what your next steps should be. It will allow you to see the extent of an injury, stitch up the area, or even remove minuscule pieces of debris that can't be seen with the naked eye.

When you are stocking your first-aid kit, you need to make sure that you are thoroughly prepared with all of the essentials. Remember to add all of the items mentioned above as they can prove to be very useful in an emergency.
