Chronic pain can become part of life for many people suffering from various diseases and conditions. Muscular dystrophy, cancer, fibromyalgia, a serious back injury and numerous other causes can lead to severe pain that is often hard to manage. If you are trying to avoid major treatments like surgery, there are options that may help to control or alleviate ongoing pain. Check with your doctor about the following options.
Nutrition
Based on the source of your pain, a certain type of eating plan may help to reduce inflammation and discomfort. Eating a controlled number of calories could lead to weight loss or muscular enhancement that can sometimes make pain easier to manage. Getting plenty of fluids can head off dehydration, which also contributes to chronic pain. Certain foods may aggravate bodily discomfort while others help to soothe physical and emotional tension that plays a role in persistent pain.
Exercise
With a doctor's permission and recommendation, physical exercise may help to improve coordination, stamina, and overall fitness. A strong, healthy body can sometimes reduce pain and inflammation by releasing serotonin and other feel-good hormones that can inhibit the impact of stressors like cortisol. Physical movement that is enjoyable, like walking, swimming, or biking, can take a person's mind off their discomfort to a certain degree and helps people to relax, further reducing the stress of constant pain.
Relaxation
People who are continuously or frequently uncomfortable due to chronic pain often find it difficult to relax. Their sleep may be disrupted, and they feel tense or anxious much of the time. Finding ways to relax both the body and the mind may help a person to deal with pain in convenient and comfortable ways. A therapist can suggest relaxation techniques that could work with your schedule and lifestyle. Make time for pleasant leisure activities and social events that help you feel happy and connected to others.
Medical Support
For unrelenting pain or in cases where the above techniques or others do not help much, if at all, ask your doctor to refer you to a pain management center for focused treatment. A pain management specialist will work with your individual symptoms and medical situation to help you find the best treatment for your pain.
There is no need to suffer physically, mentally, and emotionally without hope. Try these non-invasive adjustments to control your pain so you can begin to enjoy life more fully.
