Autoimmune diseases are known to attack the body’s own immune system and cause additional health problems among sufferers. If you’ve been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, you’ve likely tried to find ways to relieve your symptoms and live a better life. Here are four common autoimmune diseases and how to handle them.

Celiac Disease

This condition is often hereditary and causes problems with the digestive system when gluten is consumed. Gluten is a protein that’s commonly used in breads and other grain products, and eating a gluten-free diet is advised if you have celiac disease. You may not even know that you have celiac disease if your symptoms are mild, but symptoms in more severe cases often include nausea, heartburn, stomach aches and pain in the bones and joints. In addition to adopting a gluten-free diet, you should consider taking iron, calcium and vitamin D supplements to enhance nutrient absorption that’s often hampered with celiac disease.

Eosinophilic Esophagitis

Your esophagus, which is the pathway that connects your mouth to your stomach, will likely experience an abnormal increase in eosinophil white blood cells if you have eosinophilic esophagitis. Your esophagus could become damaged because of the buildup of white blood cells, which occurs because of an abnormal reaction to foods, allergens or stomach acids. Many sufferers of this condition experience symptoms like swallowing difficulties, frequent heartburn and upper abdominal pain. Living with eosinophilic esophagitis can be managed better by eating whole organic foods that aren’t as upsetting to the stomach and taking prescription medications such as proton pump inhibitors or topical steroids.

Lupus

Lupus is an autoimmune disease that’s known to attack the body’s tissues and organs and cause persistent swelling and inflammation. Frequent pain may also be experienced throughout the body. The severity of lupus may range from mild to life-threatening and can be managed better with medications like immunosuppressants and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Chemotherapy, which is most often used for treating cancer patients, can also sometimes work well for people with lupus.

Hashimoto’s Disease

This condition causes the immune system to attack the thyroid gland. Also sometimes referred to as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, this disease often leads to hypothyroidism, which occurs when the thyroid isn’t able to produce enough essential hormones for the body. Genetics, hormone imbalances and excessive iodine in the body are all known causes of Hashimoto’s disease. Symptoms often include fatigue, constipation and hair loss. You may also have trouble staying warm or have a face that appears pale or puffy when you have this condition. Hormone replacement therapy is generally the recommended treatment for Hashimoto’s disease.

If you’ve been diagnosed with any of these autoimmune diseases, modern medicine has made it possible for you to treat your symptoms better and experience less pain and discomfort. Finding the best ways to manage your condition can help improve your quality of life.
