Treatments For Damaged Skin

Skin often becomes damaged over time. As we age the skin is slower to repair itself and becomes more susceptible to damage caused by stress, our environment, time spent in the sun, food choices, chemicals and other ingredients in skincare products, and even infections or a lack of exercise.

This damage can often be repaired, either with at-home remedies or treatment by a dermatologist to address harder-to-correct concerns.

Vitamins And nutrients for damaged skin

When our skin becomes damaged it tries to repair itself, but as we age it takes longer for those repairs to be made. To boost the skin’s ability to heal, it is important to maintain the vitamins and nutrients that are needed to encourage the repair of damaged skin cells and the growth of new cells.

As collagen and elastin production are reduced the skin is less able to bounce back and will form wrinkles and begin to sag. A lack of vitamins slows the replacement of damaged cells while a lack of hydration causes skin to become dry and flaky.

Other signs of damage include sun spots or age spots, redness, rash or other reactions, and the discomfort that accompanies dry and dull skin.

Supplements for damaged skin

There are ways to encourage the health of the skin at home, including choosing nutrient-rich foods with an increase in vitamin C, protein, and zinc. A supplement or daily vitamin can be used where a balanced diet is not providing the needed vitamins, and an increase in water intake encourages skin to remain well-hydrated and boost the repair of cells.

Regular exercise for damaged skin

Maintaining regular exercise helps blood flow to the skin, carrying vital nutrients and vitamins so it can begin to repair itself. A reduction in chemicals - both in skin care and in the home - can protect the skin from further damage.

To speed the healing of the skin and further repair skin damage, skincare products rich in antioxidants, hydration, and vitamins provide the skin with all it needs to begin repair and reduce the signs of aging and damage.

Many skincare ingredients are high in vitamin C, and may contain collagen boosters and elastin to encourage the reduction of lines and wrinkles. Moisturizers can help keep the skin hydrated and repair the skin’s outer layer and protective oils to retain the moisture that is present.

Laser and chemical peels for damaged skin

When these methods are unable to create the skin that is needed, stronger solutions can be used such as laser or chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and fillers. By using a laser or chemical peel the outer damaged layer of the skin is removed and the healthy skin underneath takes its place.

Microdermabrasion removes the damaged skin by exfoliating the damaged cells away and leaving the healthy cells, while fillers are injected into wrinkled areas to fill them and reduce their appearance.

There are many things that will cause damage to skin, and part of the natural aging process creates skin more susceptible to damage and less ability to repair itself. When a change in lifestyle and diet are not enough, supplements can be used, and in some cases a dermatologist can provide further care to improve the appearance of the skin.
