You’ve likely heard of sensitive skin. There are formulas from nearly every skincare brand out there designed for skin that is easily irritated. But have you heard of sensitized skin? Whether you have or not, it is easy to think it’s just a simple choice of words, yet it goes beyond skin deep.

It’s not merely more than a few letters between these terms that makes a difference. In a nutshell:

  • Sensitive Skin – This is something in your genes that you can’t control. You can help keep sensitive comfortable, but you’ll never be able to change it. You’ll always be predisposed to skin irritations. Think eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea. It’s all coded in.
  • Sensitized Skin –Now for the big difference! Sensitized skin isn’t a skin type like sensitive skin. Instead, it refers to skin that has become conditioned by external and internal factors to make your skin irritated. Everything from your physical and emotional stress to the food you eat to the ingredients in your skincare products can damage your skin’s protective barrier. When that happens, skin becomes sensitized.

Now that you know the differences between them, if you never had trouble with your skin before and it has become worse over the years, you’re likely a victim of sensitized skin which is a condition, not a skin type. The nice thing is that you can treat both sensitive skin types and sensitized skin conditions in the same way. Here’s how!

Choose a gentle cleanser

Exfoliating irritated skin is a no-no. You’ve got to hydrate it back to health and soothe it so that your lipid barrier gets back in good health. Cream or gel-based cleansers that won’t strip skin of essential natural oils are the best choice for your cleansing step.

Boost skin barrier strength

After a proper gentle cleansing, you need to look to sealing in moisture and hydration. This will keep irritation and redness at bay. Serum formulas that are filled with vitamins and antioxidants can also help fight the signs of aging while infusing skin with essential hydration.

Choose moisturizer that works for easily irritated skin

Whether you have sensitive or sensitized skin, you’ll benefit from a moisturizer with gentle ingredients. Things like hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5 are ideal for restoring nutrients into the skin and delivering hydration into the deepest layers.

Take care of yourself inside too

You can’t get rid of sensitive skin, but with sensitized skin, you’re going to see skin problems fade away when you take care of yourself from the inside out. Sensitive skin will flare up much less too when you make eating healthy a priority. Don’t forget to drink your water and find healthy ways to handle your stress. By taking care of your overall health, you’ll see more beautiful and comfortable skin every time you look in the mirror!
