Everything You Need To Take Care Of Your Skin This Winter

The cold temperatures of winter can do a number on your skin. Damage, discomfort, pain and irritation are not uncommon during the coldest months of the year, which is why it’s important to be mindful of your skincare routine as the temperatures outside begin to dip downward. 

Some skincare efforts simply won’t cut it when it comes to winter skin management. To take the best care of your skin that you can all throughout the season, these tips can help you to maintain a healthy, hydrated and happy glow no matter the weather. 

Watch the Weather

The cold winds and icy air expose your skin to harsher conditions that require a little extra intervention on your part. Before you head outside, make sure you know what you’re going to be up against and prepare accordingly. The more severe the weather conditions, the harder it will be on your skin’s natural, protective skin barrier. 

This is especially important for those who spend a great deal of time outdoors, whether you’re one to dive into Le-Vel Thrive reviews and go for a long run in the winter weather or you’re in charge of shoveling the driveway for the length of the season. 

Make It Humid

Cold weather causes the humidity levels outside to drop, but the warm indoor temperatures that we use to heat things up and stay comfortable often have the same effects. Dry air can rob your skin of much-needed moisture. 

To counteract the effects of the lack of humidity, you may want to add a humidifier to your indoor spaces. If you don’t want to invest in a larger model, consider a smaller or more portable one to put into your bedroom. 

Hydrate

Your skin produces natural oils that help to strengthen and moisturize it to keep it healthy. One of the most effective ways to support that process is to make sure you stay as hydrated as you can from the inside out. 

It’s a lot easier to remember to drink plenty of water when it’s hot outside, but it’s equally as important to do so when it’s chilly, too. Make sure you drink plenty of water by using a reusable water bottle that helps you to keep track of just how much you’re drinking during the day. 

Moisturize

Though your go-do moisturizer probably does a great job at moisturizing your skin, you may want to consider upgrading to a stronger formula during the winter months. Some people find that an oil-based facial moisturizer helps to keep their skin softer and more moisturized than water-based versions, while others prefer to use a heavy-duty overnight moisturizer a few times per week. 

Ensure the rest of your skin sees an upgrade as well. A more intensive lotion should be applied just after a shower or bath to lock in the extra hydration. 

Use SPF

Even though you don’t spend nearly as much time outdoors during the winter as you do when it’s sandals season, it’s still important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Any snow on the ground acts as a reflector that bounces the sun’s rays upward and onto your skin, which can exacerbate any skin damage already caused by the cold conditions. 

Because the sun’s rays are hitting your skin from both above and below, make sure you’ve got a strong SPF lotion that you apply every day to your face, neck, ears and any other exposed parts of your body. 

Be Extra Careful

When the weather gets harsher outside, it can worsen any existing skin conditions and trigger inflammation, redness, irritation or sensitivity. If you have eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis or acne, it’s especially important to take extra measures to protect and soothe your skin during the winter. 

Many cold-weather triggers cause flare-ups, so any known triggers should be avoided and you should stock your bathroom cabinet with products and solutions that will soothe your skin even in the most severe circumstances.
