Sulfur is everywhere. On Earth, it is the fifth most common element. As the third most plentiful element found in the human body, we have evolved to use sulfur in a number of complex biological processes. Sulfur is an indispensable part of any diet, but unfortunately, many people do not get enough or do not utilize sulfur properly because of gastrointestinal or other chronic health conditions.

Two popular types of sulfur supplements are called DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) and MSM (methylsulfonylmethane). MSM is often simply referred to as organic sulfur. Here is an overview of the important work that sulfur performs in the human body and why getting enough is crucial for anyone looking to improve their health.

Glutathione Synthesis

As a powerful antioxidant, glutathione's importance to health cannot be overstated. Many researchers have dubbed glutathione the "master antioxidant" because it is involved in so many health-building processes. Many people are deficient in glutathione for a number of reasons – the overwhelming burden of toxic substances in modern life, lack of proper sleep, and, of course, poor diets that often lack enough sulfur.

Sulfur is an integral ingredient in the body's natural production of glutathione, helping to boost immunity and mental cognition through glutathione production. Organic sulfur crystals are a great way to get a boost of sulfur into a diet.

Arthritis

Sulfur's therapeutic activity on arthritis has been well-known for years. Many proponents of sulfur therapy for the condition advocate a kind of treatment called balneotherapy that prescribes bathing in hot springs that contain sulfur. Although many researchers caution that more evidence is needed of balneotherapy's effectiveness for treating arthritis, the results so far for affected patients are promising.

Hair Care

Some evidence exists to suggest that sulfur can help keep hair healthy by preventing dandruff. In one study of sulfur's activity when applied topically to hair, researchers found preliminary confirmation that shampoo containing sulfur as an ingredient helped to eliminate dandruff in test subjects.

Preventing Allergic Reactions

Studies have shown that sulfur works inside the body to reduce the severity of allergic reactions among the test subjects in the experiment. The exact way that sulfur prevents allergic reactions is unclear, however.

As one of the most abundant elements on Earth and in the human body, sulfur plays an enormously important role in health. Boosting sulfur intake can help improve well-being in a variety of ways.
