Attention Seasoned Seniors: September Is Healthy Aging Month

Trusted Health Products

Look around you: one in every seven of us is a full-fledged senior citizen. Amazing, right? More than 46 million Americans over the age of 65. And there are another 50 million or more who are 50 or older - that's close to 100 million people heading into the sunset of their lives.

September, which is the first month of autumn, is also appropriately - Healthy Aging Month. Its a perfect time for us seniors to assess where we are in the autumn of our lives and perhaps set some new goals. If you need a little help hitting your reset button, here are a few tips that may get your started.

At our age, positivity should not only be a noun - it should also be a verb: a call to action! Before you look into the mirror again, decide that you're going to love what you see. Don't make self acceptance a contingency. Make it unconditional.

Get Moving

If you're out of condition and want to get in shape, just get moving. There's no need for expensive fitness club membership fees; you don't have to mortgage your house in order to buy the latest and greatest piece of exercise equipment as seen on TV.

Check with your doctor to assess your overall health and make exercise plans that are realistic and safe. Water aerobics, biking, or just plain walking can get you where you want to go without your spending a lot of dough.

Exercise is good for your body, your brain, and your emotions. And a healthy diet will boost your energy so that you can optimize your exercise regimen. We all need high fiber foods like apples, broccoli, and carrots; and good fats like fatty fish, avocados, and vegetable oils. But as we age, the amounts we need change.

Your overall health, chronic health condition, level of activity or inactivity, and new lifestyle goals - these are all factors that may influence how much you need of certain nutrients. With the help of your doctor or nutritionist, reassess your need for iron, calcium, vitamins D and B-12, and other nutrients, and make a fresh start this fall.
