Your skin needs a lot of care and attention to look and feel its best. People with sensitive skin need to be extra attentive to how they take care of their skin. Irritation and dryness caused by sensitivity can be extremely uncomfortable, and it may prevent your skin from making the impression that you want.

Here are seven ways that you can manage your sensitive skin and prevent unsightly inflammation and irritation.

1. Stay Hydrated to protect sensitive skin

Dry skin is more prone to irritation. Keeping your skin well-hydrated can help to proactively prevent irritation, and one of the best ways to hydrate your skin is from the inside.

Drinking enough water every day is vital for good skin health. It helps your skin cells stay healthy and active, and it combats dryness and flaking. Most people need to drink about a gallon of water a day in order to stay adequately hydrated. It may seem like a lot but bear in mind that about 70 percent of your body is made of water.

2. Use Skin Care Products With Natural Ingredients to protect sensitive skin

Some of your efforts to take care of your sensitive skin may actually be making the problem worse. Skin care products that contain a lot of harsh and highly processed chemicals can leave your sensitive skin feeling red, raw, and splotchy.

Adopt a natural skin care routine. Use noncomedogenic cleansers and moisturizers. All-natural products and supplements tend to lack the irritating effects of highly processed products.

3. Avoid Treating Acne With Products That Can Irritate Your Skin to protect sensitive skin

While nobody wants to have to deal with acne, some treatments can cause more harm than good. Both the short term and long-term effects of some popular acne fighters such as sulfur and benzoyl peroxide can be really tough on sensitive skin and may make it more vulnerable to signs of premature aging.

Opt for an acne-treating product with an active ingredient that won’t overdry or scorch your skin. Retinol is an excellent tool for treating acne and also reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

4. Eat Foods That Are Rich in Vitamin C to protect sensitive skin

Your skin craves vitamin C. This essential nutrient is an important building block for your skin cells. It helps skin to stay strong and dense, fortifying it against irritation, fine lines and wrinkles, and discoloration.

Incorporating vitamin C into your diet can make your skin more resilient and improve its appearance. Snack on fruits such as oranges, grapefruit, and strawberries. Enjoy some vitamin C-rich vegetables such as brussels sprouts, peppers, and broccoli

5. Protect Yourself From the Sun to protect sensitive skin

A lot of the worst damage that sensitive skin sustains is from overexposure to the sun. If you’re going to be outdoors for any period of time, it’s essential that you were sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

Don’t leave your sunblock in a beach bag and forget about it; remember that sun protection is a must-have for anywhere that you go outdoors. You’ll spare yourself from red and splotchy skin that can feel hot and sore. You’ll also be protecting yourself against the long-term effects of prolonged exposure to UV rays which can include sunspots, wrinkling, and melanoma.

7. Safeguard Yourself Against the Wind and Cold to protect sensitive skin

Cold and windy weather can distress sensitive skin and cause severe drying and chapping. When temperatures drop, be sure to wear several layers of clothing. In freezing temperatures, make sure that you cover up as much of your skin as possible by wearing gloves, a scarf, and a hat.

8. Treat Cracked Skin Carefully to protect sensitive skin

When your skin has become dry and irritated to the point of cracking and bleeding, it will feel very tender and sore. Although you may be eager to quench dry skin, you have to be very careful about how you treat severely dry and damaged sensitive skin. Avoid using a fragranced lotion or a lotion made with a lot of chemical ingredients on cracked hands, use a balm or ointment made with all-natural ingredients.
