Is your hair looking dull, thin or damaged? Your haircare routine could be to blame. While good genes certainly play a role, healthy hair doesn't just happen. Almost anyone can have beautiful hair with a little knowledge and elbow grease. Whether you want to transform your drab hairdo or keep your luscious locks looking their best, try these four fantastic ways to improve and maintain your hair's health.

Shampoo Less Often

If you think that your oily hair needs a daily shampoo, think again. Frequent cleansing causes your scalp to overproduce oils in response, so weaning yourself off the washes can make your hair less greasy over time. Do you miss that morning refresh? Try washing with a light conditioner or co-wash instead of shampoo to avoid stripping your hair's natural oils.

Don't Rinse Your Conditioner

Conditioner is a great way to keep the lengths of your hair moisturized and healthy, but how much good is it doing when you wash it all down the drain? Leave a little bit of conditioner on the ends of your hair to seal in moisture until your next wash day. If your hair is extra dry, try using a moisture mask once a week. Process it under a plastic shower cap for at least 30 minutes to make sure the ingredients penetrate deep into your hair.

Take Vitamins

Healthy hair starts from the inside, but it's difficult to get all your essential nutrients from food each day. Make up the difference by taking vitamins. Some vitamins can even address specific hair issues. If you have noticed that your locks are looking thin, try taking women's vitamins for hair loss to fill in your dietary gaps along with your bald spots.

Get Regular Trims

Split ends can wreak havoc on your hair. All those little splits eventually make their way up the hair shaft until you're left with a frizzy mess. The best way to keep splits at bay is to trim your hair every eight weeks. If you're trying to grow long locks, ask your stylist for a micro-trim to avoid losing length. You can also use books or tutorials to learn how to do your own trims at home.

Although proper care plays a major role in your hair's health, serious health conditions like anemia and autoimmune disease can manifest as unhealthy hair. If you're suffering from persistent hair loss despite your best hair care efforts, consider visiting your doctor for an evaluation.
