Your skin is one of your body’s most important organs. If you’re like many people, you probably take your skin for granted, but you shouldn’t hesitate to get it examined by an experienced dermatologist so that you can remain as healthy and beautiful as possible. During a skin examination, the dermatologist can look for the following problems.

Premature Aging

Your skin may be aging faster than it should, and a dermatologist can look for problems that are causing your skin to look older. Frequent sun exposure and chronic dryness are among the main causes of premature skin aging, and your dermatologist can recommend treatments to combat these problems.

Treatment options may include topical medications or laser therapy. Chemical peels can also be effective in treating aging skin.

Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is often the result of too much sun exposure, but the condition can also develop because of other reasons. During the skin cancer examination, the dermatologist can check for suspicious moles and other skin growths that could indicate the presence of cancer.

The dermatologist can even look at the skin in areas that are difficult for you to see on your own, such as the scalp and behind the ears.

Most types of skin cancer have a high treatment success rate if they are caught and removed early. Melanoma, which can be treated with surgery, is the most serious and potentially deadly form of skin cancer and often presents itself as a mole with an unusual color or a sore that doesn’t heal.

Basal and squamous cell carcinomas are usually less serious forms of skin cancer but could cause scarring and other disfigurations if they aren’t removed.

Harmless But Bothersome Skin Growths

Not all skin growths are cancerous or otherwise dangerous, but they could still be causing you discomfort or feelings of self-consciousness. Warts, calluses, and cherry angiomas are among the most common benign skin conditions that can still give people problems.

Skin tags, which are sometimes described as hanging moles, can get caught on clothing and tear, which may result in pain and bleeding.

If the dermatologist notices any of these skin growths that could be troublesome in the future or are already giving your problems, the growths can usually be removed with minor surgery. Freezing the growths with liquid nitrogen can also be effective at removing them.

Getting your skin examined is just as important as visiting a doctor for other medical checkups. A dermatologist can offer you a comprehensive examination so that you can do whatever is necessary to improve your skin health.
