When you think of acne, it is almost always associated with the awkward teenage years. However, acne is a condition that doesn't always get left behind once you pass puberty. In fact, it is not at all uncommon for many adults to continue dealing with bad acne outbreaks from time to time. If you are curious as to why acne seems determined to hang around into your adulthood, here are some of the most common reasons.

Hormonal Fluctuations

Generally, more women than men tend to suffer periods of bad acne outbreaks in adulthood. For many women, hormonal fluctuations are often to blame. In many situations where an acne outbreak occurs, women may be pregnant, experiencing menopause, or going through other times when hormones are wildly fluctuating. If this sounds like you, blame the acne on your hormones.

Your Cosmetics

For many women and also men, certain types of skin products and cosmetics can set the stage for adult acne. Many products that are oil-based, such as moisturizers, hair care products, and cleansers, will actually block pores and lead to the formation of pimples. To lessen the chances of having such outbreaks, you can use products that are not oil-based.

Medications

If you are currently taking certain types of medications, these could be the reason you are suddenly dealing with bad acne as an adult. From birth control pills to steroids and hormonal treatments, it is best to speak with a doctor who specializes in dermatology to learn if any of your current medications are leading to your acne problems.

Medical Conditions

In addition to medications you may be taking, adult acne is also sometimes an indicator that you may have an underlying health problem. For example, some women may experience adult acne if they are found to have polycystic ovary disease, which is also characterized by weight gain and increased hair growth.

Genetics

For both men and women, adult acne may be hereditary. If your parents or other members of your family have suffered with adult acne, genetics may be to blame. Since skin types can be hereditary, you may have your parents or others to thank for your oily skin.

While adult acne can be embarrassing and frustrating to deal with on a regular basis, you do have numerous options available to get it under control. By working with your family doctor and perhaps a dermatologist, you can embark on a treatment program that can once again have your skin looking great.
