Brushing teeth is one of the best ways to maintain the health of your teeth, but many people are not doing it in the way that provides the best results. Brushing teeth at the correct angle can allow the toothbrush to reach all areas of the tooth and clean along the gums.

Most effective brushing technique

When learning to brush, people often do not learn that brushing at a 45-degree angle to the teeth will provide the best results. This angle allows the bristles to reach not only to the gumline but can often reach underneath the gumlines to remove buildup there as well.

This offers the most effective brushing technique and prevents the formation of plaque and tartar.

Removing germs and buildup

When sugar, food particles and residue from drinks buildup on the teeth, it allows for germs to live and begin to grow and multiply. Brushing and flossing the teeth removes this buildup before it hardens, and this can prevent cavities and tooth decay as well as gum disease.

Where the germs and plaque come in contact with the gums they can cause the germs to continue growing and form gum disease.

Regular dental appointments

At dental cleanings a tool is used for scaling the teeth, which removes all hardened buildup as well as the plaque that forms, and leaves teeth clean and polished. After each cleaning appointment, follow-up care is needed to keep the teeth clean and free of buildup.

As plaque cannot be removed through cleaning at home, it is important to continue to attend regular dental appointments even when brushing and flossing well at home.

Toothbrush cleanings

A toothbrush cleans the teeth by brushing away any food particles and residue that is present after eating or drinking. Bristles on the brush sweep away the germs and clean the teeth.

By placing the toothbrush against the teeth at an angle of 45 degrees, the bristles come in contact with more of the tooth surface and remove more residue with each brush.

Brushing the gums

That angle of 45 degrees allows the toothbrush bristles to reach the gumline of the teeth, and to brush right against the gums, to reach under the gums to remove buildup and can also brush the gums themselves.

By brushing under the gums, cavities that begin along the gumline are reduced. Brushing the gums keeps them clean of residue and buildup, as well as encourages circulation within the gums to keep gums healthy. This not only protects the teeth but also prevents gum disease that can cause other health concerns as well.

While brushing the teeth for two minutes twice each day will reduce the cavities and remove buildup and germs from the teeth, doing so at the correct angle will improve oral health. It allows for improved teeth and gum cleaning as well as reduces the germs in the mouth.
