As a child, you probably delighted in the fact you had a loose tooth. That meant that soon, the Tooth Fairy would be coming. As an adult, you know better. It’s not normal to lose a tooth when you’re all grown up. If any of your teeth feel loose in adulthood, it’s important to schedule a visit with your dentist as soon as possible.
Why You Might Have Loose Teeth In Adulthood

Certain factors can cause one or more of your teeth to become loose during your adult years. Among them is gum disease. According to the CDC, nearly 50 percent of adults ages 30 and older have it. Gum disease is most commonly caused from not taking proper care of your oral hygiene.

If you’re pregnant, your hormones can also be to blame for your loose teeth. In most cases, these issues resolve after you give birth. Should you feel pain or feel like your teeth are very loose, you should make sure to get a dental checkup to make sure it’s not gum disease.

Sometimes, you do everything right to take care of your teeth but an injury could knock a tooth loose. It might be the result of contact sports you play on your company league or a car accident. Clenching teeth while stressed out also loosens them.

And as you age, osteoporosis can weaken your bones, making them porous. Mostly, it affects the hips, wrists, and spine, but it can also cause trouble for the bones in your jaw. When the jaw bones lose density, teeth can loosen and fall out

What You Can Do If You Have Loose Teeth

The absolute first thing you should do if you feel that one or more of your teeth is loose is to get to your dentist. You’ll be given options for treatment. For example, if you’re grinding your teeth, your dentist can set you up with a bite guard or retainer to help you.

If you have gum disease, you will likely be treated with scaling and root planing to deep clean under the gum, getting to the root problem of the infection. Grafts for bones and soft tissue can also stave off gum troubles and tooth loss. In extreme cases, surgery may be required to remove any inflamed tissue and bone that has suffered damage.

Should you lose a tooth, you don’t have to hide your smile. Your dentist can give you a dental bridge or a dental implant to fill in the gap and really give you something to smile about!

The best thing you can do though is prevent loose teeth from happening. You can control your oral hygiene so take good care of your teeth and gums by brushing and flossing as instructed by your dentist. Manage diabetes if you have it to prevent it from causing gum disease. And if you play contact sports, make sure you always wear a properly-fitting mouth guard to keep accidents from happening. Doing so will keep your smile from faltering in just about every scenario!
