Tooth Pain And What it Means

There are many causes of tooth pain, but all need to be addressed by a dentist. Some common causes are a broken or chipped tooth; a cavity; a filling that has become damaged, loose, or fallen out; grinding teeth especially during sleep; or gum disease. This pain may present itself in one place or in many, and may show up in ear and throat pain as well.


In general a toothache is not uncommon and may be related to a sinus infection, cold or flu symptoms, or ear infections. If it lasts longer than a day or two it is worth addressing with a dentist or a doctor depending on the other symptoms. If additional symptoms appear that are related directly to the tooth such as swollen gums, bleeding in the mouth, puss or drainage from the tooth area, or bad breath, then a dental professional is needed. These are all signs of an infected tooth and gums and will require treatment as such.


Antibiotics are also used for infections in the ear and throat or sinus infections, all of which can be diagnosed by your doctor. The dentist or doctor will prescribe appropriate antibiotics to get rid of the infection, and following that the damaged tooth can be repaired. No tooth repair can be undertaken while the tooth or gum is infected. A broken tooth that has not become infected can be repaired with a filling, root canal, or other dental procedure. This can sometimes be done at the first appointment but may require a return visit to repair the damage after the diagnosis.

Good Oral Hygiene

To help avoid tooth pain and the complications that cause it, it is important to maintain a healthy diet and good oral hygiene. Diets with reduced sugar and few to no sugary drinks are better for tooth care and help reduce cavities and tooth damage. Eating foods high in nutrients such as calcium and vitamin D can assist in growth of strong teeth as well. When tooth grinding or clenching is a concern, the dentist may create an overnight guard for the teeth or a mouth guard for use during sports or physical activities. A mouth guard will help prevent trauma and damage to the teeth which in turn helps to limit tooth pain.

Tooth pain may be present for many reasons and it is important to consider all symptoms as a whole to find the cause of the pain. Once the cause of the pain is located it can be treated by a physician or a dentist as needed, and often can be halted and repaired. While a slight toothache may not be a large concern and may clear up in a few hours or a day, ongoing or extreme pain should be addressed quickly. The sooner the concern is addressed the easier the treatment and solution will be.
