Tooth Disease – What Is It?

If you are suffering from intense pain in your teeth or your gums, you may be suffering from some sort of gum or teeth disease. What exactly is tooth disease though, and how can you help to cure it?

What Causes Tooth Disease?

One form of tooth disease is periodontal disease which is a disease of the gums. This can be typically caused by poor hygiene of the mouth and will increase in stages and can lead to detrimental outcomes.

Below are some of the common causes of tooth disease:

• Poor brushing patterns
• Poor flossing habits
• Build-up and hardening of plaque
• Bacteria in the mouth
• Irregular dentist visits
• Smoking (leading cause)

Some other risk factors that don’t cause tooth disease but contribute to it include the following:

• Diabetes
• Hormonal changes
• Certain medications
• Certain illnesses
• Genetics

How Do You Know If You Have Tooth/Gum Disease?

If you are suffering from pain in the mouth and with your gums, you may automatically jump to the conclusion that you have cavities or something that is not too serious. However, if you have any of the symptoms below, you may want to see medical help to ensure that what you are experiencing is nothing more serious. If you wait too long, tooth disease can lead to detrimental side effects such as tooth decay or even tooth loss.

Below are some of the common symptoms of tooth disease or gum disease:

• Bad breath that persists
• Swollen or inflamed gums
• Bleeding or sensitive gums
• Pain when chewing food
• Loose teeth or teeth that are falling out
• Teeth that are sensitive to the touch
• Receding gum lines

How Will You Get Diagnosed?

In order to get diagnosed, your dentist will examine you mouth to check for any inflammation, use a probe to check for pockets that may appear around you teeth, will ask about your medical history to see if you are at risk for tooth disease, or use an X-ray to examine for bone loss or damage.

What Are The Treatments For Tooth Or Gum Disease?

On the bright side, there are some treatments that can help to control inflammation and pain. The treatment will vary depending on how far along your disease is, but along with the treatment that is prescribed by your dentist, there are some tips that your dentist will give you to care for your teeth and mouth at home:

• Brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes
• Floss daily to remove plaque from between your teeth
• Make regular visits to the dentist
• Stop smoking (if applicable)

Tooth and gum disease can be detrimental to your mouth health. Make sure that you take the proper steps and precautions to prevent tooth and gum disease in the first place. However, if you are suffering from gum disease, make sure you seek medical treatment so that you can reduce the amount of pain and discomfort you are in.
