Stained Teeth - Foods To Avoid

The enamel on teeth is strong enough for chewing all types of foods, but is also porous and can stain easily with some food and beverage choices. Some foods are well known to cause teeth stains, such as coffee, tea, and beets.

Other activities such as smoking will cause hard-to-remove stains and teeth discoloration.

Tea, Coffee And Wine

Tea and coffee are the most consumed choices that will cause staining and change the color of your teeth. They are often sipped so they remain in contact with the teeth over a longer period of time, allowing them to sit on and around the teeth and stain them.

However red wine is the most likely to cause staining and the acid of the wine and the added affects of the berries used to create it make the perfect drink for causing teeth stains.

Berries And Beets

As with wines there are many berries, most in fact, that will cause stains on the teeth. The bright and vibrant colors of the berries are both what make them appealing and healthy but are also the very thing that will cause teeth stains.

The acidity of a berry can weaken the enamel, even temporarily, and allow the colors to stain the teeth.

Another bright food that has an increased risk of stains is beets. Not only will they stain your hands as you cut and prepare them, but they will do the same to your teeth as you consume them.

Acidic Foods’ Affect On Teeth Strength And Enamel

Foods high in acidity are a risk for harming teeth strength and enamel as well as increasing the risk of stains. These types of foods include not only the drinks mentioned above, but soda pops and foods that include vinegar such as sauces.

Pasta sauce is rich in flavour but often contains higher levels of not only acid, but the added colors from the foods add to their staining ability. A cream sauce that includes a milk product can reduce that likelihood as the milk will dilute it and counteract the acid.

While it can be helpful to reduce the consumption of these foods and drinks to maintain the color of your teeth, there are a few other options that can help while not restricting your diet completely. Drinking through a straw will reduce the amount of liquid that is in contact with your teeth and reduce the affect of staining your teeth.

Rinsing the mouth with water after eating or drinking any of these foods also helps lower staining possibilities.
